1
American Cancer Society
  • Prostate Cancer

2
Definition
  • Prostate cancer is the uncontrollable growth and
spread of cells in the prostate. If not
controlled, it can possibly lead to death.

3
Deaths
  • An estimated 30,350 men will die of prostate
    cancer in 2005.
  • Although the mortality rates are declining, the
rates are still disproportionately higher in
    African-American men.

4
Signs and Symptoms
  • Frequent urination, especially at night.
  • Difficulty starting urination or the inability to
    urinate.
  • Weak or painful urination.

5
Risk Factors
  • Gender Prostate cancer affects men only.
  • Age More than 70 percent of all prostate cancers
are in men over the age of 65
  • Race Men of African-American descent have the
highest prostate cancer incidence rates in the
    world.
  • Heredity Five to 10 percent of prostate cancers
    may be inherited.
  • Diet High fat diets may play a part

in causing prostate cancer.
6
Early Detection/Guidelines
  • Beginning at age 50, all men should talk to their
doctors about having a digital rectal exam (DRE)
and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test
    every year.
  • Men who are at high risk (African-Americans or
men with a first-degree relative diagnosed with
prostate cancer at a young age) should begin
    testing at age 45.

7
Treatment
Prostate cancer treatment depends on the stage of
the cancer, as well as the age and other medical
conditions of the patient. Treatment may consist
of one of the following, or a combination of
thereof
  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Hormone Therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Watchful Waiting

8
Survival Rates
  • Five year localized survival rate 100 percent
  • Five year overall survival rate 99 percent

9
Research
  • Focusing on better ways to prevent the disease
    and identifying how it grows.
  • Seeking to identify men at high risk so screening
    may begin earlier.
  • Looking at foods, such as tomatoes and soybeans,
that may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

10
American Cancer Society Programs
  • Man to Man
  • I Can Cope
  • Cancer Survivors Network

11
Bottom Line
  • Age is the main risk factor for prostate cancer.
  • Early detection increases survival and treatment
    options.
  • All men 50 years and older should talk to their
doctors about having annual DRE and PSA tests to
    help find prostate cancer early.
  • Men with an abnormal DRE or PSA should discuss
all available treatment options with their
doctor, especially since it is not clear whether
all men need to be treated immediately for
    prostate cancer.
