Relationship between NAFEMS and ISO
Longstanding history of collaboration with ISO -
NAFEMS CAD/FE working group was formed at about
the time work began on STEP (ISO 10303) - mid
1980s - NAFEMS has liaison status with ISO
TC184/SC4 - NAFEMS made significant
contributions to ISO 10303-104 "Finite element
analysis", which is the key part of AP 209
edition 1 - NAFEMS managed the GEM (Generic
Engineering analysis Model) project which
proposed extensions to AP 209, and produced
initial inputs to - ISO 10303-51

Mesh - ISO 10303-53 Numerical analysis
These parts are now used within AP 209 edition 2
which brings together structural analysis and
CFD.

What is Simulation Data Management (SDM)?
  • Systematic management of documents, data, and
    processes associated with modeling, simulation
    and analysis
  • Provides for the management of data objects and
    metadata at all levels of granularity and
    abstraction, including design and analysis
    parameters, requirements, and results.
  • Used for work-in-progress and completed data,
    collaboration, knowledge capture, reuse, and
    long-term archival
  • Support execution of analysis processes (may
    include process authoring)
  • Roots started in the 1980s with need for common
    denominator across applications

State of SDM Issues
  • Still a relatively new discipline with lessons to
    be learned1
  • Engineers may view product data management (PDM)
    systems as difficult to use
  • Simulation has unique requirements and issues as
    compared to PDM
  • Number and size of files
  • Much of analysis is abstract and not associated
    with product parts
  • Interchangeable standards (or lack) between
    vendor software, storage analysis results
  • COTS software purposed for managing simulation
    data has only recently become available, and is
    still undergoing significant maturation
    integration of simulation software and data
    management is increasing
  • Interest in simulation data management has
    greatly increased in the past several years
  • For most engineers, formal data management is
    not part of a daily
    routine.

Mission
  • The mission of the NAFEMS Simulation Data
    Management Working Group (SDMWG) is to provide a
    vendor-neutral, end-user driven consortium that
    promotes the advancement of the technology and
    practices associated with the management of
    engineering simulation data and processes. This
    includes education, communication, promotion of
    standards, and development of requirements that
    will have general benefits to the simulation and
    analysis community with the identification of
    benchmarks and major strategic issues (grand
    challenges).

Vision
  • The SDMWG vision is that SDM is to be
    cost-effective, easy to use, and ubiquitous. SDM
    is integrated with the business, engineering
    modeling and simulation processes, used for
    work-in-progress and completed data,
    collaboration, knowledge capture, reuse, and
    long-term archival. Data management methods are
    integrated with simulation analysis methods,
    ranging from closed-form to highly complex
    multiphysics numerical models.
  • Engineering simulation data encompasses the data,
    models, processes, documents and metadata
    intrinsic to performing modeling, simulation, and
    analysis. SDM provides for the management of data
    objects and metadata at all levels of granularity
    and abstraction, including design and analysis
    parameters, requirements, and results. SDM
    solutions are integrated with other systems and
    databases that manage engineering and product
    data.
  • SDM systems are available for managing and
    executing a wide range of modeling and simulation
    data and processes, across the breadth of
    engineering disciplines, supporting a
    heterogeneous analysis environment. Integration
    of design, test, and manufacturing data with
    modeling, simulation and analysis is supported.

Relationship between NAFEMS and ISO for
Simulation Data Management Future
  • NAFEMS/ISO collaboration activities for SDM still
    to be determined
  • Has been suggested
  • The use of the Semantic Web for engineering
    analysis requires ontologies of analysis types,
    model types, loading types, boundary condition
    types, etc. These ontologies could be maintained
    by NAFEMS acting as an ISO Maintenance Agency.
  • The digital curation of analysis data, some of
    which is inevitably in native file formats,
    requires a registry of native file formats and
    software versions able to read them. The
    management of such a registry is not within the
    scope of ISO but is complementary to the work of
    ISO. This registry could be maintained by NAFEMS
  • Survey may identify other ideas for collaboration
