Title: The Amazon Food Web

1
The Amazon Food Web
  • By Amanda T., Laura Z., Katie I., and Ali L.

2
Food web of the Amazon
  • This is a picture of a Amazon food web.
  • It is made up of living things in the Amazon.
  • For example all of the animals eat/drink water.

3
Omnivores
  • Omnivores are animals that will eat a variety of
meat, and some vegetable matter but they are not
able to digest types of grains and plants,
because they cannot digest it. One example of a
    large omnivore is a bear.

4
More omnivores
  • Omnivores have more foods to choose from than
    others
  • Omnivores diets can depend on their age
  • Omnivores usually have big teeth to tear meat

5
Scavengers
  • Cock Roaches eat materials such as paper,
    clothing, dead animals, and plants!
  • There are over 3,500 species of Cock Roaches!
  • Cock Roaches like warm head, humid, and dark
    environments!
  • Cock Roaches have small flat bodies, so it will
make it easier for them to fit in small places!
  • They have appendages on their underside called
cerci, the Cerci is sensitive and helps detect
movement, so they can hide in a safe spot!
  • Did you know that a Cock Roaches can live up to
10 days without their heads?! Believe it or that,
they will die because they cant drink water
    without there heads!

6
Scavengers of the Amazon
  • Opossums eat dead animals on the side of the
road, they eat the dead animals that have been
    hit by a car.
  • Boas eat small animals such as mice, and rats.

7
Carnivores of the Amazon
  • Some of the many carnivores of the Amazon is the
    baby leopard
  • This baby eats rodents, birds and even insects.
They usually don't eat animals bigger then them.
  • No leopard has the same fur pattern it mostly
depends on were they live. This leopard lives in
    south America

8
Herbivores
  • Herbivores are animals that only eat plant and do
not eat meat. This is a picture of a sloth.

9
Producers
  • A producer or plants are the beginning of the
food chain. The producers are eaten by the
herbivores. For example bananas are producers.

10
The Fierce Jaguar
  • "A beast that kills its prey with only one
leap" is the meaning of the jaguar's name,
jaguara, a word that comes from the South
American Indians. The claws of the Jaguar helps
it get food more easier, and faster. Jaguars are
one of the fastest cats in the world, and its
one of only four roaring cats in the world. The
jaguar's prey consists of different types of
animals like, capybara, tapir, and peccary. The
jaguar is an opportunistic feeder and sometimes
jaguars eat deer, sloths, armadillos, and fish.
The jaguar is one of the biggest and the most
beautiful in the cat family. It is becoming an
extinct species at a fast rate from pouters that
    want their expensive fur.

11
The Exotic Bird, Toucans
  • The Toucans are exotic birds found only in
the western hemisphere, in south America. Toucans
have a rainbow looking like beak, thats good
for chewing there food. There are only 42 species
or toucans that live in the tropical rainforests,
in Central and South America especially in the
Amazon Region. There is one bird that looks like
toucans, its called Macaws, the difference
between them is that the toucans beak is longer
then the macaws, the other thing is that the
Macaws tail is longer then the toucans.

12
The Danger of Pink Dolphins
  • Pink Dolphins live deep in the rivers and
lakes of the Amazon. The pink dolphins are called
BOUTU by the local fishermen. They swim in small
groups and eat all kinds of fish and crabs. Pink
dolphins arent really pink, theyre blue! All of
the dolphins that live in the river may come
extinct due to the pollution and the human
hunting. Dolphins are wanted for their eyes,
teeth, genitals because of supposed aphrodisiac
powers. Its uncommon in the Amazon, for a
dolphin to get caught in a net, and die of
drowning. BOUTU is at the top of the food chain
because of the pollution and oil spills for the
boats. The toxic spills cover over hundreds of
miles away, killing all of the sea animals.

13
The Kinkajou mammal
  • The kinkajou is a small, brownish
honey gold color. The kinkajou is called the
Mico de Noche because of the color of its
amazing fur. The Kinkajou lives in the
rainforests of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala,
Honduras, and Panama. The kinkajou, lives in
trees and is related to the Raccoon. A kinkajous
tongue is about 5 feet long. The lifespan of this
animal is the average of 29 years, it ways from
    5-6 pounds.

The cubs can be born almost any time of the year.
They are born one baby per litter. The gestation
period is anywhere from 98-115 days. Because they
are born in a dark den, their eyes and ears are
tightly closed. They open in about 2 to 6 weeks.
In another 3 to 6 weeks, their tail becomes
prehensile (grasping).
14
Theobroma cacoa
  • The Cocoa tree grows in the Amazon, and is
produced into chocolate and sent all over the
world! The natural tree grows 12-16 meters tall
and it produces small dark-green like leathery
leaf, and has white flowers. The Theobroma Cacoa
is about 8 inches long and contains 60 seeds in
its white pulp! The seeds are taken out, and
grinded to make a brow powder, which turns into a
bitter tasting chocolate. The other parts of the
tree are used to help treat asthma.

15
The Vanilla Bean
  • The Vanilla bean is a member of the
orchard family. The vanilla beans veins reach out
to be 60-100 feet long. The leaves are about 8
inches long and grow along the stems of the
plants. The tree produces a fruit that takes 9
months to mature. The Fresh bean, has no scent at
all. Making a usable bean for food is a lengthy
process where the bean is collected, dried by the
exposure to the sun and night sweating for 10
days and then fermented and cured for up to 5
    months.
