Radios
  • How do they work?

By Amanda Deller
2
How do they work?
  • Radios use Radio waves to send signals to
satellites and you hear what comes to your home
    radio.

3
Parts of the radio
  • There are two main parts of a radio
  • Transmitter
  • Reciever

4
Transmitter
  • Takes some type of message
  • Converts it onto a sine wave
  • And transmits it with radio waves

5
Reciever
  • Receives the radio waves
  • Decodes the message from the sine wave it receives

6
Radio waves!
  • Form of electro magnetic radiation
  • Created whenever a charged object accelerates
with a frequency that lies in the radio frequency
  • Radio frequency is part of the electromagnetic
    spectrum

7
AM Radio
  • AM stands for-Amplitude modulation
  • AM transmitters vary the signal level smoothly in
direct proportion to the sound they are
    transmitting
  • Main disadvatage
  • Many sounds in the background. ( No sounds are
    rejected)

8
FM radio
  • FM stands for frequency Modulation
  • the effects of amplitude noise are minimized.
  • no compensation for different signal levels is
    required

9
Putting this all together..
  • -an electrical signal is sent to an antenna
  • -the antenna converts the electrical signal into
    an electromagnetic wave
  • -wave travels through air
  • -you hear what the radio sent
