Objectives
  • Develop a system to directly analyze aggregate
    shape properties
  • Computer-automated hardware for capturing
    aggregate images of different sizes at different
    resolutions.
  • Software for processing and analyzing images.
  • Investigate the relationship between measured
    shape properties and performance.

Implementation
  • Incorporating aggregate shape properties into the
    design procedure of hot mix asphalt, Portland
    cement concrete, and unbound pavement layers.
  • A tool for QC/QA of aggregates. The system will
    offer an automated method for enforcing aggregate
    shape specifications and ensuring consistent
    properties.

Why AIMS?
  • Most available systems focus on the form
    (flat-elongation) of coarse aggregates.
  • Fine aggregates have mostly been neglected.
  • Texture is not considered in the available
    systems.
  • There are not enough considerations in the
    available systems to the lighting scheme and
    image resolution.
