Broadband Network Architectures
Evolution towards Distributed Intelligence
  • Network Information Processing Systems 97
  • Juhana Räsänen, Vesa-Matti Puro, Petteri Koponen,
    Olli Martikainen
  • Helsinki University of Technology
  • Laboratory of Telecommunications Software and
    Multimedia

2
Motivation
  • ATM and optical switching will increase the
    capacity of backbone networks
  • xDSL and wireless access technologies will bring
low-cost broadband access available to the
    residential users
  • Result Bandwidth will become a commodity, which
makes services the most critical component of the
    future broadband networks

Traditional ATM networks
  • Traditional commercially available
  • Connection setup using signalling protocols, eg.
    ITU-T Q.2931 SS7 BISUP or ATM Forum UNI 3.x
    / 4.0 PNNI
  • The only service is the end-to-end ATM
    connectivity, either point-to-point or multicast
  • How to introduce real services?

IN enabled ATM
  • Adds the concept of services by letting external
service logics control the connection setup
  • Service logic invocation through triggers that
react to certain events of the call setup process
  • Call forwarding, freephone, televoting
  • But Can all intelligent services for broadband
networks be built on PSTN service model?

Distributed service logic
  • The interface to the Call Control is opened for
external service logics and end user applications
  • The Call Control interface is accessed eg. using
CORBA or other distributed programming tools
  • A transport protocol, eg. TCP/IP or SS7, is
    needed for carrying CORBA requests
  • Is ATM signalling needed anymore?

10
Intelligence Evolution
  • Traditional ATM needs a service concept
  • Introduction of IN creates the service concept,
but does not satisfy broadband networking needs
  • Service logic distribution can be achieved by
    opening the Call Control interface
  • Result ATM signalling (at least at the UNI) and
traditional Call Model can be replaced

12
Service control over IP
  • The Call Control is replaced with an object-based
environment into which service logics can be
    deployed as executable objects
  • Service objects are able to control the network
through interfaces provided by the Service
    Execution Environment
  • All control data can be transported over TCP/IP

13
Calypso architecture
  • Based on the service control over IP idea
  • Service-oriented a platform for easy service
    creation and deployment
  • The service logic objects are executed in a
run-time Java environment, which provides the
    interfaces needed for service setup
  • TV distribution will be demonstrated Dec 1997

Conclusion
  • A new kind of service architecture is needed to
support future needs of broadband networks
  • ATM signalling and IN model can be at least
partially replaced by distributed service model
  • Calypso project develops an architecture in which
the services are implemented with Java components
that control an ATM switch directly
