School Colors
  • Brown and Gold became WMUs official school
    colors in 1904.
  • The colors represent the brown-eyed Susan's that
used to thrive on WMUs campus.
  • These colors were suggested by the institutions
    first secretary, Josephine Jackson.
  • While the shades of the colors have been updated,
brown and gold are still WMUs official school
    colors.

Mascots
  • WMUs original nickname was the Hilltoppers.
  • WMU became the Broncos in 1939, because the
nickname Hilltoppers would often get confused
    with other schools.
  • Buster got his name in 1981 due to a student
contest. Other entries included Goldie, Bucky,
    Rocco, and Wildfire.
  • Buster received a make-over in 1988 when the
athletics staff bought its first full-fledged
    bronco costume.
