The Early Years
  • Booker T. Washington was born in Hales Ford in
    1856. He had to carry his masters daughters
    books to school for her and back. He did not know
    his real father

Childhood
  • He had to be put to work immediately. On
    September 22, 1862, Booker and his family were
    free. He went to work by packing salt into bags.

Childhood 2
  • One day his mom talked to a teacher at the
    school to help him learn math and all the other
    subjects and he said yes. Then he started to work
    in the mine. One day in the mine he heard these
    people talking about a school that you could work
    for the school to pay for the classes.

Childhood 3
  • He asked his mother if he could go and she said
    no. Then he heard about a job. The job was to be
    a servant and he took the job. One day when he
    was sweeping, the lady came in to inspect. She
    told him he missed the corners and he did it.

Life as a Teen
  • When he was 13 years old his parents let him go
    to Hampton. His step father gave him money.
    Then everybody gave him a little bit of money.
    First he went on a train. Then he walked and
    hitched a stagecoach anytime he could. He found
    a town and no one would let him stay at a hotel.
    Then he ran and hid under a sidewalk. He found a
    job at the harbor but did not stay at a hotel, to
    save money. He went on a boat to Hampton. Then
    he arrived at Hampton. He went in and waited for
    her to call him but he watched whites pass by him
    into the office. Then the principal came out.
    She told him to sweep the floor and polish the
    desk.

Life as a Teen and Adult
  • Then she came in and took a handkerchief,
    wiped the desk looked at the handkerchief not
    even a speckle of dust on the handkerchief. Then
    she said, you are accepted. Booker was proud
    of himself. He became a teacher at Tuskegee. Then
    the principle at Tuskegee. He died on November
    13 in Tuskegee, Alabama.

How I feel
  • I feel like he had a very hard time in his life.
    But he never quit in his life.
