    Manitoba for any experiences in the summer.

Why choose a summer experience?
  • Allows an opportunity to explore areas of
    medicine that seem to be of interest to you.
  • Can rule things in or rule things out!
  • Create mentorship relationships.
  • Will contribute to your learning.

Early Exposure Experiences
  • Experiences during your academic year
  • Contact the physician mentor and arrange a time
    to spend in that practice setting
  • Provides a quick snapshot of that part of their
    practice
  • Good to look at many different experiences

Summer Early Exposures
  • Periods of 2-12 weeks
  • Arranged by the student
  • Register with S204- Beth Jennings
  • Submit form for approval and registration
  • Objectives for the summer experience necessary
  • Will appear on your university transcript

Summer early exposure
  • Must be with physician associated with the
    University of Manitoba
  • Minimum of 2 weeks but can be longer
  • Can do with more than one preceptor but must do
    at least 2 weeks with each preceptor.
  • Completion of the early exposure will require
    signature from preceptor on evaluation form
  • Pass/fail non-credit course on transcript.

External Electives
  • Outside of Manitoba
  • Registration with the College in the province you
    are considering doing an early exposure in is
    required.
  • Ontario is the only province that does not
    require registration
  • Details regarding provincial registration is
    available thru student affairs office.

External Electives outside of Canada
  • If the activity does not require you to function
    in the role of a medical student registration is
    not required.
  • If you will be functioning in the role of a
    medical student you need to be registered.
  • Confirmation of the elective by the supervisor is
    required, experiences associated with a
    university are preferred.
  • Please see student affairs regarding approval for
    any such electives
  • Travel health requirements need to be fulfilled.

BSC Medicine
  • In the BSc med program you are registered as a
    medical student for the summer.
  • As such you can arrange clinical exposures during
    the summer.
  • Your preceptor may be able to find some
    experiences for you.
  • If not please come and see us and we can try and
    find something for you.
  • Needs to be fitted in around obligations to the
    program.

Province/Territory Registration Requirements
  • British Columbia
  • All medical students must be registered with the
    College. The process occurs only through the
    undergraduate medical education office and for
    out of province students are granted only to
    clerkship level students and above.
  • Alberta
  • All medical students must be registered with the
    College, this process occurs through the
    undergraduate medical education office.
    Observerships do not need to be registered.

  • All students must be registered with the College,
    registration can occur directly with the College.
  • Manitoba
  • All students must be registered, registration
    occurs only through the undergraduate medical
    education office. The College does not approve
    observerships.

  • In Ontario the undergraduate medical students are
    not required to be registered with the College.
    Out of province students seeking to do an
    elective are advised to contact the undergraduate
    medical education office associated with the
    locations they wish to locate in.

  • Quebec
  • The College does not require registration of
    medical students, but the universities involved
    ask that the students register with the
    university involved in the site the students are
    wishing to student in.
  • Newfoundland-Labrador
  • All medical students must be registered with the
    College, registration must occur through the
    undergraduate medical education office, St.
    Johns, Newfoundland-Labrador.

  • All medical students must be registered, can
    register directly with the College.

Province/Territory Registration Requirements
  • Prince Edward Island
  • All medical students receiving an educational
    experience in the hospitals or doctors offices
    are required to be registered on the Medical
    Education Register. This would include summer
    students who are working in the offices of the
    Medical Society, and not necessarily under the
    auspices of a medical school.

  • All students are required to be on the College
    register, they can register directly with the
    College.
  • North West Territories
  • Students are required to be registered with the
    College on an educational register permit.
    Registration can occur directly with the College.

Province/Territory Registration Requirements
  • Yukon
  • All students must apply for and be issued a
    medical student permit. The application and
    licensing process is conducted through the
    Registrars office. One person is designated to
    coordinate medical student placement in the
    Yukon.
