Program Updates
  • All programs in ASC reduced to 181 cr-hrs by OSU
    Board of Trustees in 6/07
  • BA in CIS reduced GEC requirements by 10 cr-hrs
    (now 181 cr-hrs)
  • BS in CIS reduced GEC requirements by 15 cr-hrs
added CSE 601 and capstone design course (now 181
    cr-hrs)
  • BS in CSE reduced GEC requirements by 5 cr-hrs
slightly revised tech options added tracks in
    individualized option (now 191 cr-hrs)

10
BS in CSE Program Objectives
  • Program accredited by Engineering Accreditation
    Commission and Computing Accreditation Commission
    (both of ABET)
  • Accreditation criteria require program to have
published Program Objectives and Program Outcomes

11
ABETs Definitions
  • Program Objectives
  • Broad statements that describe career and
    professional accomplishments that program is
preparing graduates to achieve in the years
    following graduation
  • Program Outcomes
  • Statements that describe what students are
expected to know and be able to do by time of
    graduation

12
Criteria Requirements
  • Program Objectives
  • Must be established/revised based on the needs
of constituencies (such as alumni, employers)
  • Input from External Advisory Board especially
    recommended
  • Program Outcomes
  • Must be formulated to foster attainment of
    objectives
  • Must include ABET specified outcomes
  • Extent of student achievement of outcomes must be
assessed and results used to improve program

13
Current Objectives
  • Graduates will have thorough grounding in key
principles and practices of computing and will
have applied their software development skills
and knowledge of foundational principles to the
design and implementation of practical systems of
software and/or hardware components to meet
    customer requirements.
  • Graduates will have an understanding of
    additional engineering principles, and the
    mathematical and scientific concepts that
underlie them, and will have applied this
    understanding, as appropriate, in analyzing
    real-world problems and designing suitable
    solutions.

14
Current Objectives
  • Graduates will have an understanding of human and
social issues, and will be in the process of
becoming informed and involved members of their
communities, and will be responsible engineering
    and computing professionals.
  • Graduates will have appropriate interaction and
organizational skills, and will be routinely
using and further developing these skills in
    their professional careers.

15
Current Objectives
  • Graduates will be successfully employed in the
computing profession, and will be actively
engaged in learning, understanding, applying new
ideas/technologies as the field evolves or will
have successfully completed, or be actively
    pursuing, graduate studies in computing.

16
But ...
  • Are too long and involved
  • Include things that belong in the outcomes
    (awkwardly restated ?)

17
Proposed Objectives
  • Graduates of the program will be employed in the
computing profession, and will be engaged in
learning, understanding, and applying new ideas
and technologies as the field evolves.
  • Graduates with an interest in, and aptitude for,
advanced studies in computing will have
completed, or will be actively pursuing, graduate
    studies in computing.

18
Process
  • Discussed in Undergraduate Studies Committee
  • Currently seeking comments from
  • External Advisory Board
  • Alumni (via biannual Alumni Survey end of May)
  • Will use comments to fine-tune proposed
objectives over summer, early fall then present
    to faculty for approval
  • Also in the process of revising outcomes to
    account for new CAC outcomes
