1Georgia Techs Crew 60to the Mars Desert
Research Station
2History of GTMars
- MDRS Crew 37, commanded by Dr. Jan Osburg
- First crew from a single academic institution
- MDRS Crew 47, led by Dr. Jan Osburg
- MDRS Crew 60, led by Emily Colvin
- First all-student crew
3MDRS Crew 60
-Emily Colvin, Commander -Erik Kabo, XO,

Mission Support Specialist
4Logistics
- Meals
- Assign meals to crewmembers, one person compiles
ingredients - Freeze stuff in meal-sized portions
- Perishables wont make it past the first week
- Have lots of snacks, especially if you have a
crew of college students
5GreenHab
- Rotated plants plants closest to the wall were
driest - Shelf built on otherside of greenhousesegment
to minimizeplants against thewalls,
facilitatewatering/pruning
6GreenHab Engineering
- Submerged pumps replaced
- Tank 1 un-tilted, to allow correct draining of
tank into Tank 2 - Replaced bilge pump in Tank 4, however there were
several failures, requires future investigation - Toilet supply tank cleaned of sludge
7Science Astronomy Human Factors
- MDRS requires aremote for thecloud cover
- Cognitive Testing
- Computer tests
- Mood Testing (saliva tests)
- Saliva test eating restrictions (no caffeine)
were very annoying
8Science - Geology
- Magnetometer Conductivity Meter
- Very difficult to carry and use in suits
- Looked at conductivity for HF radio
- Found a high spot north of hab septic tank?
- Future work needsmore planning/bettertransportat
ion (ATVcargo transport notquite appropriate)
9Engineering - Communications
- Digipeater Crossband repeater on Skyline Rim,
solar powered - HF radio for communications with Atlanta school
group
10Engineering - Rover
- Very cute. Not very useful. More to come next
year!
11Engineering Observatory Path
12Maintenance - Other
- Thorough toilet cleaning
- Added water and temp to OneMeter
- Installed 24VDC to 12VDC conversion system
- Engineering Inventory
13Outreach
- First MarsEd event
- Similar contact with an Atlanta physics class
