  • After French and Indian War conclusion in 1763,
King George III and his government looked to
taxing the American colonies as a way of paying
    their war costs. 5
  • But it was the Crown's attempt to tax tea that
spurred the colonists to action and laid the
groundwork for the American Revolution. 5

6
  • In previous years, the 13 colonies saw a number
    of commercial tariffs including 5
  • Sugar Act of 1764, which taxed sugar, coffee, and
    wine.
  • Stamp Act of 1765, which put a tax on all printed
matter, such as newspapers and playing cards.
  • Townshend Acts of 1767 which placed taxes on
items like glass, paints, paper, and tea.
  • The Tea Act of 1773 was the last straw.

7
  • The Sons of Liberty had secret meetings at which
they discussed how best to get their message
across to Great Britain, that the American people
wanted more of a role in governing themselves.
  • Samuel Adams organized a boycott of tea from
China sold by the British East India Company,
whose sales in the colonies then fell from
900,000 pounds in 1769 to 237,000 pounds in just
    3 years.9

8
  • Three ships from London, the Dartmouth, the
Eleanor and the Beaver, sailed into Boston Harbor
from November 28th to December 8, 1773, carrying
the tea across the Atlantic. 8

9
  • Dartmouths captain Hall, carried 114 chest of
tea, the ship arrived on Sunday November 28th.7
  • Eleanors captain Coffin, carried 114 chest of
tea, the ship arrived on Thursday December
    2nd.7
  • Beavers captain Bruce, carried 112 chest of tea,
the ship arrived on Wednesday December 15th. 7

10
  • Loaded with tea from the East India Company, they
were all anchored at Griffins Wharf but were
prevented from unloading their cargo at Boston
    harbor. 8

11
  • Demanding that the tea be returned to where it
came from or face consequences, the Sons of
Liberty, led by Samuel Adams began to meet to
determine the fate of the three cargo ships in
    the Boston harbor. 8

  • Sons of Liberty dumping the tea in to the harbor.

14
  • By nine o'clock p.m., the Sons of Liberty had
emptied a total of 340 crates of tea into Boston
    Harbor. 8

15
  • Some Sons of Liberty would mix the tea in the sea
    so nobody would see it.
  • 1

16
  • Some Boston citizens cheered as the Sons of
Liberty dumped tea in to the harbor.
  • 1

17
  • Because the Sons of Liberty were disguised as
Native Americans, they could claim that they were
not guilty of dumping the tea. 2
  • A British tax collector saw the Sons of Liberty
dumping the tea in to the sea. He told them that
they would have to pay all the taxes for the lost
    tea. 2

18
  • Then the very next year saw the passage of what
came to be called the Intolerable Acts, one of
which closed the port of Boston entirely.
  • The Boston Tea Party has been seen as helping
    spark the American Revolution!!
