Profile population needs, resources, and
readiness to address needs and gaps

• Identify a local evaluator and assemble a County
  Epi Workgroup.
• Identify what resources you have.
• Identify and review whats already been done.

What will you need for a needs assessment that is
culturally competent?

• Make sure you work closely with your evaluators
  and educate them about community politics and
  cultural customs.
• Use the meetings to invite and inspire others to
  participate. Share your proposal, get their
  views, and ask for referrals.
• Follow up! If they cant be involved at this
  point, plan to ask them again later add them to
  your project contacts database.

Whats already been done?

• Look for databases, published research, and do an
  internet search.
• Are there data from local hospitals, law
  enforcement, the TEA, the health system, local
  agencies or research centers that tell you about
  community problems? The best data allow you to
  look at subgroup differences.
• Is there published research relevant to your
  particular group? It may be outdated, refer to
  irrelevant technologies, or be tied to
  geographical features not a part of your
  community .
