Title: Sedimentary Rock I'D'

1
Sedimentary RockI.D.
2
  • Sedimentary rocks from when sediments are
    hardened by compression or compaction.
  • Sediments can come from many sources, which is
our first key to identifying the rock.

3
Step 1. What is the Compositional Source? (pg 114)
  • Detrital- Made of rock fragments, mineral grains,
    or clays. (Think Sandstone)
  • Biochemical- Made of the remains of organisms or
tiny fragments of organic material. (Think coal)
  • Chemical- Mineral crystals that were precipitated
out of solution. (Think rock salt)

4
Step 2 Texture (pg. 113)
  • Just like with Igneous rocks, texture is the
characteristics of the grains that make up the
    rock.
  • Texture of Detrital rocks is based on the size of
the grains. There is an obvious difference
    between sandstone and mudstone.
  • For chemical rocks, the texture is how large the
    crystals grew when they precipitated.

5
Step 3 What else does this rock have? (Or not
have?)
  • Fossils-
  • Acid Reaction-
  • Is it brittle or hard?
  • How does it break? (think shale)

6
  • Go over 1 with them.

7
Here is how today will work
  • Collaborate with the others at your table to I.D.
    the sample.
  • Put your answer on the board (the what), along
with the major reasons for that choice (the why).

8
  • If you arent sure, feel free to consider the
other groups answers as you deliberate.
  • Once were finished them all, well go over each
one to see if they stand up to scrutiny.

9
The spice
  • Just to make this worthwhile, the group with the
most and best correct answers will get 2 points
    on the midterm.
