Success In The Age Of High-Stakes Testing and
Accountability

Proposal Format
  • Purpose of Study
  • Research Questions
  • Review of the Literature
  • Research Design

3
Music education is often scrutinized as
insignificant and frivolous entertainment rather
than an area of essential knowledge and skills
(Weinberger, 1999a).
4
In the past 10 years academic contributions of
music to other areas have become more extensively
recognized and accepted, enabling educators to
show increased interest in understanding the
beneficial academic outcomes of music(Wiggins,
2001).
5
Purpose of the Study
  • The study was to examine the possible impact of
music instruction on student achievement in
selected South Texas public schools with
    kindergarten through twelfth grade students.

6
Research Questions
  • Does music instruction influence student
    achievement?
  • Does music instruction influence the learning
    environment and school climate?
  • Does music instruction influence brain
    development thus impacting student achievement?

7
Research Questions cont.
  • 4. What is the level of awareness,
implementation, and support of music instruction?
  • 5. Do years of experience influence perceptions
    regarding music instruction?

8
Hypotheses
  • HO1 There is no statistical significant
difference in achievement between students in
music appreciation classes and those who are not.
  • HO2 There is no statistical significant
relationship between years of experience and
    implementation of music instruction.

9
Significance of the Study
  • Research on music implementation is crucial for
all educators due to the increase of
    accountability on student achievement.
  • Educators must explore alternatives to utilize
    when striving for academic achievement.
  • Provide awareness of how music instruction
    influences student achievement, moreover with
    administration whose decisions affect curriculum.

Review of Literature
  • Of all the arts, the one that appears to affect
the lives of children most directly is music.
Music is something they can understand,
participate in, and enjoy. Music leads children
into worlds of fantasy and imagination. It has no
barriers of race, ethnicity, or color
  • Laura Bryan, Ed. D.

12
Review of Literature
  • Benefits of music instruction include
  • Success in society, school, developing
    intelligence, and in life.
  • Music is part of the fabric of our society.
  • There are some interesting facts and figures that
exist on the benefits of music instruction.

13
Historical Background
  • Western Heritage
  • New World America
  • Early American Education
  • Growth of Music Education
  • Music Education in the 20th Century

14
Student Achievement
  • Students learning to play musical instruments
hold higher G.P.A.s and develop faster
    physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
This also adds to enhanced ability in
    concentration, memory, eyesight, and hearing.
  • Students in the fine arts continue to surpass
their non-arts peers on SAT scoring 52 points
higher on the verbal portion and 37 points higher
    on the mathematics portion.
  • According to MENC (1999) music participants
receive more academic honors, awards, and grade
    of A, A/B, and B.
  • Math Reading gains.

15
School Climate and Learning Environment
  • Scripp (2002), a music educator described how
disciplines can assist each other by reinforcing
and expanding the learning from one discipline to
another (i.e. linking music with other
    disciplines).
  • The study of music in schools has been determined
to promote social well-being by giving children a
sense of belonging to a group.

16
Brain Development
  • Music engages both hemispheres of the brain.
  • Brain imagery shows differentiations in brain
    structure between music instrument instruction
    vs. no music instruction.
  • Thicker neural fibers
  • Increasing cerebral hemispheres
  • Increasing EEG frequencies therefore increasing
    cognitive processing
  • Mozart Effect

18
Level of awareness, implementation, and support
  • According to the National Center For Education
Statistics Analysis Report for June 2002- 46 of
music specialists strongly agreed that parents
support their efforts in educating their children
and 58 of music specialist agreed that they were
supported by the administration in their schools.

The Arts are an integral component of our
educational system in developing the attitudes,
characteristics, and intellectual capacities
required for students to participate successfully
in todays society and economy.
20
The arts teach self-discipline, reinforce
self-esteem, foster thinking skills and
creativity, and promote teamwork and cooperation.
Most notably, though, the Arts are important in
and of themselves in that they are a vital and
vibrant part of our personal, social, and
cultural environment.Shirley Neeley, Ed. D

21
Research Design
  • Mixed methods-combination of quantitative data
analysis and an examination of qualitative
    interviews .
  • Descriptive and comparative

22
Population
  • Quantitative data
  • 100 respondents
  • 7 elementary music educators
  • 7 secondary music educators
  • 61 non-music educators
  • 20 administrators/directors
  • 7 school board members
  • Qualitative data
  • 12 participants
  • 4 elementary music educators
  • 2 non-music educators
  • 4 administrators
  • 2 school board members

23
Instrumentation
  • Management Information System department will
extract TAKS scores from students who are in
music appreciation classes vs. students who are
not in any music appreciation classes.
  • Questionnaire
  • Semi-structured Interviews

24
Data Analysis
  • Likert scale
  • ANOVA-difference between students in music
appreciation classes vs. those who are not, and
the dependent variable will be the TAKS test
  • Chi-square-years of experience

25
In conclusion, become aware of the benefits music
instruction has to offer and the impact it has on
academic achievement.
