In nonsmoking adults, secondhand smoke causes

• Exacerbation of asthma

In children and fetuses, secondhand smoke causes

• Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
• Low birth weight
• Spontaneous abortion
• Acute respiratory illnesses (including pneumonia
  and bronchitis)
• Chronic respiratory symptoms
• Reduced lung function growth
• Asthma and exacerbation of asthma symptoms
• Acute and chronic middle ear disease

• If we eliminated exposure to tobacco smoke in the
  Americas, we would save between 122,000 and
  209,000 lives every year.

Smoke free environments normalize nonsmoking.
This means that youth stop seeing smoking as a
normal part of growing up, and that smokers
receive encouragement to quit or to smoke less.

The immediate implication of smoking bans for

The industry also knows the costs.

• The Tobacco Merchants Association took a look
  at smoking restriction legislation and cigarette
  consumption between 1961 and 1982restrictive
  smoking laws accounted for 21 percent of the
  variation in cigarette consumption from state to
  state during that time

this means nearly 7 billion fewer cigarettes
smoked each year because of workplace smoking
restrictions. Thats 350 million packs of
cigarettes. At a dollar a pack even the lightest
of workplaces smoking restrictions is costing
this industry 233 million dollars a year in
