Background
  • The SCOPE project was developed following an
    Obesity Summit of European Union Health
    Ministries in Copenhagen in 2002, where feedback
    from 24 countries highlighted the need to improve
    the clinical management of obesity.  
  • This is a joint project that has been developed
    by the International and European Associations
    for the Study of Obesity (IASO EASO).

Mission
  • SCOPE aims to promote a coherent approach to the
    management of obese and overweight patients in
    order to improve standards of patient care and
    represents a major initiative in the
    international drive to tackle obesity.

Key objectives
  • To provide recognition for experts in the
    management of obesity and to create a European
    Register of SCOPE Fellows
  • To enhance the quality of obesity education in
    Europe by developing continuing medical education
    style events and an on-line course to complement
    existing national activities through SCOPE
    Membership
  • To improve treatment of the obese and overweight
    patient.

Structure
  • Strand 1- Fellowship scheme
  • Recognises those clinicians who are experts in
    the field of obesity management within Europe.
  • Strand 2- Membership scheme
  • Acknowledges clinicians working with obese and
    overweight patients, who have undertaken
    continuing professional development in the field
    of obesity management.

Strand 1
  • SCOPE Fellowship
  • The SCOPE Fellows Scheme recognises those
    clinicians who are experts in the field of
    obesity management within Europe.
  • The three tiers to the Fellows scheme which
    recognises the level of experience are
  • Founding Fellows Internationally renowned
    experts in the field of obesity management,
    initially identified by a special search
    committee of SCOPE. They were announced during
    ECO2004. This was a one off process.
  • Regional Fellows Renowned European experts in
    the field of obesity management.
  • National Fellows Nationally renowned experts in
    the field of obesity management.

  • IASO is currently accepting applicants for
  • European Fellows
  • National Fellows (within Europe)
  • Criteria for becoming a SCOPE Fellow are
    available on the SCOPE website.

Strand 2
  • SCOPE Membership
  • Acknowledges clinicians working with obese and
    overweight patients, who have undertaken
    continuing professional development in the field
    of obesity management.
  • To become a SCOPE Member, applicants must 
  • Attend relevant CPD style events in order to
    accrue 8 SCOPE points within a 2 year period and
  • Successfully complete the SCOPE online course.

Strand 2- How to become a member
  • Continuing medical education events include
  • SCOPE Courses
  • Accredited Locally Organised Courses
  • Relevant clinical lectures at international
    congresses.

Strand 2- How to become a member
  • The SCOPE Online Course aims to help users
    improve their patient management skills. It
    begins with a patient consultation and highlights
    the range of issues a clinician will need to
    consider as he/she progresses through the
    management process.
  • The following topics are covered
  • How and why has the patient been presented to
    you?
  • Is your patient obese and at risk?
  • How will you assess your patient?
  • Is your patients lifestyle contributing to their
    weight problem?
  • Is your patient ready and able to change their
    lifestyle?
  • What are the principles of obesity management?
  • How can you help your patient maintain their
    weight loss?
  • All material contained in the course is
    supported by evidence. References are
    hyper-linked to original reports or to the
    abstracts as they appear on PubMed.

Strand 2- How to become a member
  • To successfully pass the assessment process of
    the course, users are required to correctly
    answer 75 of randomly selected multiple choice
    questions.
  • Users choose the level at which they will be
    assessed once they have finished the course
  • Advanced Level e.g. specialists
  • Intermediate Level e.g. general practitioners
  • Basic Level e.g. nurses, allied health
    professions
  • Successful completion of the SCOPE Online Course
    is mandatory to SCOPE Membership.
