2Welcome to Public RelationsPublic
relations is story telling. Persons and
organizations have the right to tell their sides
of the story. Its a constitutionally protected
activity, like journalism and advertising. But
public relations differs from journalism because
it openly advocates for clients and
organizations. And PR differs from advertising
because it must earn, not purchase, the
reputation so important to organizations. Bagin

19Its about doing
- Communication courses are about doing. We will
learn lots of theory in this class, but the real
test is putting what you learn into practice. If
you cant actually do it, you cant work in the
public relations industry. Even if your major is
something other than communication, you will need
public relations skills to succeed. If you cant
communicate successfully in any field, you are
not going to get very far. To actually apply
what you learn takes a lot more than simple
memorization. You need to truly understand the
material by making it a part of your life.
