Statistics
  • In a study conducted by Strategic Marketing Assn.
  • Workers claim they do not use PPE (personal
    protective equipment) regularly because their
    employers do not require them to.
  • ¾ of workers use hardhats, safety boots, and
    high-visibility apparel.
  • Protective coveralls are used by every 4 out of
    10 workers. ( most claim the clothing is hot and
    irratating)

OSHA Regulations
  • General requirements. - 1910.132
  • OSHA requires employees to provide certain PPE
    when necessary.
  • The dress code for the industry is more an
    adopted standard.

What to wear?
  • Long sleeve shirts when appropriate
  • For welding
  • To prevent sunburns
  • Light colored shirts to keep cool
  • Long pants to protect legs
  • Jeans or durable material

What not to wear
  • Shorts
  • Clothes that are too tight
  • or loose
  • Overalls
  • Pants with cuffs
  • Nylon around welding
  • Synthetic fabrics around
  • electrical work

Possible Accident
  • A worker wearing loose clothing could get tangled
    up. In 1999, 5 fatalities occurred in the
    construction industry from being caught in
    equipment.

Jewelry
  • Bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings, etc. can
    all be hazardous on the construction site.
  • Rings are especially associated with pinch
    points.

Hair Length
  • Long hair can be very dangerous on a construction
    site
  • Caught in equipment
  • Hair should be pulled back
  • and out of the way.

Conclusion
  • Use your head when dressing for work.
  • Dress appropriately according to the weather.
  • Certain PPE such as Nomex, a fireproof material,
    do not breathe as well as other mtrls. Constant
    breaks and fluids are needed to keep from
    overheating.
