Program Mission
  • To provide a unique clinical, educational, and
    cultural experience for student externs, faculty,
    and alumni while promoting the chiropractic
    profession and Palmer College of Chiropractic.
    This is achieved through providing quality
    humanitarian care to underserved populations
    around the world.

Where It All Began
  • 12 years ago, a faculty member accompanied a
    medical group to Haiti as the only chiropractor
  • He witnessed first-hand the great need for health
    care
  • Returned a few months later, this time with a
    student
  • A program was launched

  • 12-15 trips per year during the 3 Palmer
    Davenport break periods (4-5 trips per break
    period)

  • Well-defined processes and procedures
  • Assessment is an important aspect

  • For students, examining and adjusting so many
    people all day long and for several days in a
    row, assists in honing their skills and also
    increases their level of confidence
  • Patients find the relief they seek and often
    return daily for care, bringing family and
    friends
  • Many report miracles
  • The chiropractic story spreads!

  • Students may see conditions they may never see in
    the campus clinics or future private practice
  • Cultural links to conditions are many In
    Vietnam, many L5 subluxations due to bending and
    squatting in Haiti, many lower cervical and
    upper thoracic subluxations from carrying heavy
    objects on head

    diamond mining town)
  • Capao Very small town with a unique
    populations. It is a very naturalistic
    community.
  • The Clinic setting will be in small town
    (villages ) and rural areas
  • Palmer will work with direct support of the local
    communities, school system, health authorities,
    and the church
  • The expected clinic pace is moderate to busy.

  • Lodging will be in the local pousadas (small
    hotels), which range from simple (clean) to fancy
    rustic style.
  • Expect lots of rivers and mountain hikes.
  • This is the 5th trip to this location.
  • The food is great! Its Brazilian style, but
    leaning towards health.
  • The clinic site will be in the local community
    centers and schools or hospitals
  • There are 6 Chiropractors in the State of Bahia,
    but only 1 in the Chapada Diamantina region
  • Portuguese is the official and main spoken
    language (Very few people speak English)
  • Climate Ranges between 70F and 85F
  • Please note that while this is a great trip
    it is simple, rural and basic. The attractions
    are outdoors without a lot or urban excitement.
    There will be bugs, dirt and the occasional
    potential for cold showers. Please consider
    carefully if this type of trip is for you.

  • Approximate Cost 4500-4800
  • Manaus is in the State of Amazonas and is located
    within the Amazon Rain Forest
  • Clinics will be in a local church. The Local
    Chiropractor and will be assisting us.
  • Clinic should be very busy and well organized.
  • Clinic hours are 12 to 8 rather than 8-5.
  • Lodging is in a four star hotel. It is located
    on the edge of the city in a very nice area.

  • The activities for free days include a trip to
    the Monkey Jungle and hiking in the Amazon and
    a boat trip to the Meeting of the Waters
  • This is the 9th trip to this location
  • Very few people speak English in this region.
  • Typical cuisine is rice and beans as well as
    meat, vegetables and fruit. If you love meat,
    you will be full on this trip. Vegetarians fare
    well too.
  • There is one full time DC in this area and 1
    part-time DC.
  • Portuguese is the official and main spoken
    language.
  • Climate Ranges between 80F and 100F

  • This is one of the original clinic abroad sites.
  • Located in the Caribbean as part of St Vincent
    and the Grenadines
  • Bequia is 7 square miles
  • There is 1 known chiropractor in the area.
  • Clinic will be in schools. A local hotel and a
    local guest house.
  • There are a lot of school children to see.
  • Clinic is a relaxed to moderate pace with a wide
    variety of patients.
  • Due to English being spoken and the work in
    schools, there is a lot of patient education
    done.

  • This is a small group trip which can be wonderful
    or have downfalls.
  • Typical cuisine is fish, vegetables and fruit.
  • The culture is very laid back and friendly.
  • Island English is spoken.
  • Climate Ranges between 70F and 92F

  • Approximate Cost 5500-6000
  • Morocco is in Northern Africa
  • Clinics will be held in health care facilities.
  • Clinic should be very busy and well organized.
  • There are no local chiropractors, but there is
    one chiropractor in Morocco.
  • There is a chiropractic association. The head of
    it is a Florida DC who will be joining us.
  • We will be working with local Medical doctors.

  • Lodging is in a four to five star hotel. It is
    very very nice.
  • The activities for free days include a trip to
    Gibraltar and a trip to Spain, shopping.. Riding
    a camel may not be unheard of.
  • This is the 5th trip to this location
  • Very few people speak English in this region.
  • Typical cuisine is Moroccan French meat,
    vegetables, bread, sauces and fruit. Camel is
    considered a treat!!!!! It is rich but great.
  • Moroccan Arabic is the official and main spoken
    language but French is an official second
    language.

Eligibility Criteria
  • At time of application
  • PCCD Must be in Class 082 or 083
  • PCCD Must be cleared for Level II Clinic (from
    CHC) by November 16, 2007
  • PCCD Must be enrolled in Clinic 1 or 2 during
    the trimester prior to trip departure.
  • PCCW Must have completed all of their academic
    requirements through 9th quarter by December 12,
    2007 and currently enrolled in 10th quarter
  • PCCW Must be outpatient ready by December 12,
    2007
  • PCCF Must be in Class 082 and 083
  • PCCF - Passed Clinic Proficiency Exam

Eligibility Criteria
  • At time of application
  • All Must be in good academic standing
  • All 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA
  • All No formal violations on file regarding the
    Student Clinical Code of Ethics
  • All No outstanding tuition balance
  • All Must submit application all documents as
    required by Thursday, October 12, 2007

Financial Aid
  • For U.S. students, loans may be available.
  • Canadian students may have some loan money
    available , however, this is a very individualized
    process.
  • Each applicant will be assessed for financial aid
    eligibility by the Financial Planning office.
  • After the selection process is completed, those
    selected will process required paperwork for
    awarded aid.
  • Can opt to pay for a trip out-of-pocket.

Classes and Participation
  • Attendance at pre-departure classes is mandatory.
  • PCCD Only There will be 2 all group meetings on
    November 27 and 28 from 345 -515. Room TBA.
  • PCCW and PCCF meeting dates will be determined by
    your program liaison.
  • Failure to attend these meetings in full will
    result in your dismissal from the program!!!
  • Schedule of individual group classes will be
    determined pending the faculty selected and their
    availability.
  • If you cannot commit 100 to pre-departure class
    attendance, DO NOT APPLY TO THE CLINIC ABROAD
    PROGRAM.

Classes and Participation
  • You MUST apply for your passport now prior to
    returning next trimester. It is taking up to 3
    months to get them and these locations may need a
    visa. This may take another 2-3 weeks!
  • In Davenport, you can apply at the post office on
    2nd street. If you are going out of town, check
    locally.
  • You may also check locations at
    www.travel.state.gov
  • Make sure you have a copy of your birth
    certificate that day!!!!!!

Class Attendance Policy
  • Attendance at all pre-departure classes is
    required. The consequences for failure to attend
    one meeting are a written warning letter and a
    required make-up session. Missing more than one
    class will result in the aforementioned plus
    deduction of clinic credits earned on the trip (5
    adjustments deducted for every missed meeting).
    Missing several classes will result in the
    aforementioned may result in loss of trip along
    with associated financial aid and any expenses
    incurred on the students behalf at that point
    will be the responsibility of the student.
    Additionally, the matter may be submitted to the
    College Judicial Officer by CAP administration.

How Do I Apply?
  • Before applying, read the Clinic Abroad Program
    Handbook dated July 2007. (PCCD Reserve desk of
    the Library, Clinic Abroad office - W123,
    Capstone Programs office in Main Clinic PCCF
    Library Dr. Bobo PCCW Library Dr. Whitney).
    There is also a link in the website.
  • If selected for a trip, you will receive a
    handbook to keep.
  • On-line application process starts today.
  • w3.palmer.edu/clinicabroad
  • All applications must be completed on-line with
    specific instructions for providing a hard copy
    of most documents.
  • All applications must be completed by October 12,
    2007.
  • Please read all on-line directions carefully.

How Do I Apply?
  • Note incomplete or late applications will not be
    accepted.
  • Please email any questions to Lori Curry at
    curry_l_at_palmer.edu . Use Application Question
    in the subject line. Do not forget to include
    your name.
  • Please do NOT wait until the last minute and then
    expect help!
  • Please complete all forms and print out as
    directed. Sign the application. Provide hard
    copies to the Clinic Capstone Programs office,
    Daniele Hall (PCCD), Dr. Bobo (PCCF) or Dr.
    Theresa Whitney (PCCW), in one complete package
    by the application deadline (Oct. 12).
  • Please remember to print your name on the back of
    the photo.

How you will be Selected
  • Applying does not mean you are automatically
    selected for participation.
  • After an initial screening for eligibility, your
    applications will be reviewed and scored by at
    least 3 individuals.
  • This scoring will be used to determine selection.
  • If your first choice is filled, we forward your
    application to your second choice selection, if
    it is not already filled.
  • If you have a second, third or fourth choice,
    please include it on the application.
  • Do not put one down if you do not want to go
    there! .
