Title: The recently deceased Rodney Dangerfield made millions telling the world, I get no respect

1
  • The recently deceased Rodney Dangerfield made
millions telling the world, I get no respect!
  • The late Mr. Dangerfield, however, received far
more respect than does Jesus Christ.
  • Many of the Jews, especially among the ruling
class, had no respect for Jesus Christ while He
    was on the earth.
  • Their reasons were varied.
  • Many do not respect Him, today, for some of those
    same reasons.

2
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 1 Because of the conditions surrounding
    His earthly life
  • The community in which He lived.

3
  • Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew
and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to
him, We have found Him of whom Moses in the law,
and also the prophets, wrote--Jesus of Nazareth,
the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said to him,
Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip
said to him, Come and see. (John 146)

4
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 1 Because of the conditions surrounding
    His earthly life
  • The community in which He lived.
  • His social standing.

5
  • Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished
these parables, that He departed from there. And
when He had come to His own country, He taught
them in their synagogue, so that they were
astonished and said, Where did this Man get this
wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the
    carpenter's son? (Matt. 1353-55)

6
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 1 Because of the conditions surrounding
    His earthly life
  • The community in which He lived.
  • His social standing.
  • His lack of formal schooling.

7
  • About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into
the temple and began teaching. The Jews therefore
marveled, saying, How is it that this Man has
learning, when he has never studied? (John
    714-15)

8
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 1 Because of the conditions surrounding
    His earthly life
  • The community in which He lived.
  • His social standing.
  • His lack of formal schooling.
  • His family.

9
  • Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His
mother called Mary? And His brothers James,
Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are
they not all with us? Where then did this Man get
    all these things? (Matt. 1355-56)

10
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 2 Because of the things He did
  • Eating with sinners and publicans.

11
  • Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the
house, that behold, many tax collectors and
sinners came and sat down with Him and His
disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they
said to His disciples, Why does your Teacher eat
with tax collectors and sinners? When Jesus
heard that, He said to them, Those who are well
have no need of a physician, but those who are
sick. But go and learn what this means I desire
mercy and not sacrifice. For I did not come to
call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.
    (Matt. 910-13)

12
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 2 Because of the things He did
  • Eating with sinners and publicans.
  • Permitting a sinful woman to touch Him.

13
  • Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with
him. And He went to the Pharisee's house, and sat
down to eat. And behold, a woman in the city who
was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the
table in the Pharisee's house, brought an
alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His
feet behind Him weeping and she began to wash
His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the
hair of her head and she kissed His feet and
anointed them with the fragrant oil. Now when the
Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke
to himself, saying, This man, if He were a
prophet, would know who and what manner of woman
this is who is touching Him, for she is a
    sinner. (Luke 739)

14
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 2 Because of the things He did
  • Eating with sinners and publicans.
  • Permitting a sinful woman to touch Him.
  • Healing on the Sabbath.

15
  • Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity
    thirty-eight years.
  • Jesus said to him, Rise, take up your bed and
walk. And immediately the man was made well,
took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the
    Sabbath.
  • Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said
to him, See, you have been made well. Sin no
more, lest a worse thing come upon you. The man
departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who
had made him well. For this reason the Jews
persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because
He had done these things on the Sabbath. (John
    55, 8-9, 14-16)

16
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 3 Because of the things He said
  • That God was His Father.

17
  • But Jesus answered them, My Father has been
working until now, and I have been working.
Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill
Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but
also said that God was His Father, making Himself
    equal with God. (John 517-18)

18
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 3 Because of the things He said
  • That God was His Father.
  • That one must eat His flesh and drink His blood.

19
  • Then Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say
to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of
Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.
Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has
eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last
day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is
drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My
blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living
Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father,
so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
This is the bread which came down from
heaven--not as your fathers ate the manna, and
are dead. He who eats this bread will live
forever. These things He said in the synagogue
as He taught in Capernaum. Therefore many of His
disciples, when they heard this, said This is a
hard saying who can understand it? (John
    653-60)

20
  • Jesus answered them and said, Most assuredly, I
say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the
signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were
filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes,
but for the food which endures to everlasting
life, which the Son of Man will give you, because
God the Father has set His seal on Him. Then
they said to Him, what shall we do, that we may
work the works of God? Jesus answered and said
to them, This is the work of God, that you
believe in Him whom He sent. Therefore they said
to Him, What sign will You perform then, that we
may see it and believe You? What work will You
do? Our fathers ate the manna in the desert as
it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to
eat. Then Jesus said to them, Most assuredly,
I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread
from heaven, but My Father gives you the true
    bread from heaven. (John 626-32)

21
  • For the bread of God is He who comes down from
heaven and gives life to the world. Then they
said to Him, Lord, give us this bread always.
And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life.
He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who
believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to
you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.
All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and
the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast
out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do
My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that
of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but
should raise it up at the last day. And this is
the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who
sees the Son and believes in Him may have
everlasting life and I will raise him up at the
    last day. (John 633-40)

22
  • The Jews then complained about Him, because He
said, I am the bread which came down from
heaven. And they said, Is not this Jesus, the
son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?
How is it then that He says, 'I have come down
from heaven'? Jesus therefore answered and said
to them, Do not murmur among yourselves. No one
can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me
draws him and I will raise him up at the last
day. It is written in the prophets, 'And they
shall all be taught by God.' Therefore everyone
who has heard and learned from the Father comes
to Me. Not that anyone has seen the Father,
except He who is from God He has seen the
Father. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who
believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the
    bread of life. (John 641-48)

23
  • Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and
are dead. This is the bread which comes down from
heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am
the living bread which came down from heaven. If
anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever
and the bread that I shall give is My flesh,
which I shall give for the life of the world.
The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves,
saying, How can this Man give us His flesh to
    eat? (John 649-52)

24
(John
    653-60)

25
  • Do not labor for the food which perishes, but
for the food which endures to everlasting life,
which the Son of Man will give you, because God
the Father has set His seal on Him. (John 627)
  • Jesus answered and said to them, This is the
work of God, that you believe in Him whom He
    sent. (John 629)
  • Then Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say
to you, Moses did not give you the bread from
heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread
from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes
down from heaven and gives life to the world.
    (John 632-33)
  • And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life.
He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who
believes in Me shall never thirst. (John 635)

26
  • This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that
of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but
should raise it up at the last day. And this is
the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who
sees the Son and believes in Him may have
everlasting life and I will raise him up at the
    last day. (John 639-40)
  • No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent
Me draws him and I will raise him up at the last
    day. (John 644)
  • Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in
Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life.
    (John 647-48)
  • This is the bread which comes down from heaven,
that one may eat of it and not die. I am the
living bread which came down from heaven. If
anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever
and the bread that I shall give is My flesh,
which I shall give for the life of the world.
    (John 650-51)

27
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 3 Because of the things He said
  • That God was His Father.
  • That one must eat His flesh and drink His blood.
  • That those who keep His word will never see death.

28
  • Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My
word he shall never see death. (John 851)

29
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 3 Because of the things He said
  • That God was His Father.
  • That one must eat His flesh and drink His blood.
  • That those who keep His word will never see
    death.
  • That He pre-existed Abraham.

30
  • Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and
he saw it and was glad. Then the Jews said to
Him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have
You seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, Most
assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I
AM. Then they took up stones to throw at Him
but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple,
going through the midst of them, and so passed
    by. (John 858)

31
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 4 Because of the things He taught
  • That there is one church.

32
  • And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on
this rock I will build My church, and the gates
of Hades shall not prevail against it. (Matt.
    1618)

33
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 4 Because of the things He taught
  • That there is one church.
  • That self-denial is essential to discipleship.

34
  • When He had called the people to Himself, with
His disciples also, He said to them, Whoever
desires to come after Me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever
desires to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for My sake and the
gospel's will save it. For what will it profit a
man if he gains the whole world, and loses his
own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for
his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My
words in this adulterous and sinful generation,
of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when
He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy
    angels. (Mark 834-38)

35
WHY NO RESPECT FOR JESUS CHRIST?
  • REASON 4 Because of the things He taught
  • That there is one church.
  • That self-denial is essential to discipleship.
  • That water baptism is essential to salvation.

36
  • And He said to them, Go into all the world and
preach the gospel to every creature. He who
believes and is baptized will be saved but he
who does not believe will be condemned. (Mark
    1615-16)
