Syllabus (cont.)
  • COURSE DESCRIPTION
  • AST 1003 is an astronomy course outlining the
knowledge gained from space probes of the Sun,
the Moon, Earth, and the planets and evaluating
the Solar System formation theories. The students
will use writing compositions, observations, and
mathematical analysis to analyze the data
    obtained by observing these bodies.

Questions for the Day
  • What is Science?
  • What is Astronomy?
  • Why are you interested in Astronomy?
  • How do we model the sky?

7
What is Science?
  • Science is the methodological study of systems.
  • Science studies these systems on why they work,
how they work, and the relationship of these
    systems.
  • Science tries to ask questions that quantify the
    systems.

8
Scientific Method
9
Scientific Method
  • Brainstorm Ask a Question
  • Hypothesis Testable Question
  • Experiment Testing the Question
  • Theory A Repeatable Experiment
  • Law

10
Types of Science
  • Physical Sciences
  • Studies how physical phenomena work.
  • Biological Sciences
  • Studies how biological phenomena work.
  • Social Sciences
  • Studies how social systems work.

11
Physical Sciences
  • Astronomy
  • The study of how the planets, stars, galaxies,
    and universe work.
  • Physics
  • The general study of how systems work
    individually and in connection.
  • Chemistry
  • The study of how atoms combine and create
    compounds.
  • Earth Sciences
  • The study of how the Earth and its atmosphere
    works

12
What is Astronomy?
  • The science of the study of physical properties
of the planets, stars, galaxies, and the
    universe.
  • The word comes from astro meaning star and
    nomos meaning name in Latin.
  • Different from astrology, which was the study of
the motions of the celestial globe.

13
Types of Astronomy
  • Observational
  • Observers at telescopes obtaining observations
    and modeling those observations.
  • Theoretical
  • Theoreticians at computers finding new models for
    the observations.

21
Why are you interested in Astronomy?
  • My Interests are
  • Planetary Geology
  • Galactic Structure
  • Blazars
  • Creation of the Universe

22
How do we model the sky?
  • We identify the parts.
  • We measure the angles.
  • We then notice the movement.

planetarium show in a five to seven sentence
    paragraph.
  • Post your responses to What interests you? and
Your Journeys Beginning on the blog in at
least three sentences. And then respond to one
other persons response in three sentences.
