2
Introduction
  • Tertulia
  • a Spanish term that means
  • an informal gathering to discuss current
  • events, literature or other topics of
    interest

3
The Setting
  • We are creating a Web CT site called Tertulia.
  • Students in all sections of both courses will
have access to the Web CT site.

4
Premise
  • Students taking SPN 3300 and SPN 3420
    concurrently
  • are more engaged and successful than students who
    take them consecutively
  • apply grammar learned in both classes
  • produce higher quality written work

5
Problem
  • How to give the same benefits to students taking
    these courses consecutively

6
Goals
  • Create a Web CT connection between the 2 courses
  • Apply one-minute paper concept in Web CT,
    classroom (from Morrison-Shetlars presentation)
  • Create a more effective grading rubric for
written work (Kaplan and Telep Hodgson)

7
Creating the Learning Environment
  • The Web CT site includes
  • Chat rooms for students of both courses
  • Interactive grammar, vocabulary and language
    skills exercises
  • Practice quizzes
  • Tip of the day
  • Socorro! (Help!)
  • Information on composition grading

8
Outcomes
  • Students will
  • Gain interactive practice with language skills
    inside and outside of class
  • Interact and communicate with other students
    outside of class

9
Outcomes - Projected
  • Improvement in language skills of students not
enrolled in the two courses concurrently will
more closely match than without the WebCT link.
  • Students will have a more positive experience
taking these courses and will feel as if they
    have accomplished more

10
Outcomes-projected
  • Instructors will have the opportunity to
collaborate with each other even if their
    schedules conflict
  • Instructors will have a more positive experience
    in these courses
  • Instructors will coordinate course materials more
effectively to avoid repetition of content and
    assignments

11
Outcomes, continued
  • Professors will
  • Interact and communicate with students outside of
    class
  • Interact and communicate with each other
  • Get feedback from students to assist them with
    muddy points on Web CT
  • Avoid overlap in course materials
  • Grade compositions in a uniform manner

12
Outcomes - Actual
  • The two courses will be offered in Fall 03

13
Implementation
  • The Web CT site has been established and we are
    presently loading exercises, discussion topics,
Tips of the Day, and other pertinent materials.
  • The instructors of the two courses will be
meeting in May to coordinate syllabi, schedules
    and grading rubrics.
  • Each instructor will load her materials into Web
    CT before August 10th

14
Implementation - Actual
  • Hold your horses til Fall 03

15
Conclusion
  • Many thanks to the FCTL for giving us the
opportunity to improve these two courses!
  • and everything else we do.
