Objective
  • Important Factors in Asexual
  • Propagation
  • Different Methods of Cuttings (Tip,
    Stem, Leaf)
  • The Role Certain Hormones contribute to
    Asexual
  • propagation

3
Asexual Propagation (vegetative)
  • Result in Clones, which are genetically
    identical to the parent
  • Asexual propagation is possible because plant
    cells are totipotent--?
  • Dedifferentiation is the capability of mature
cells to return to a meristematic condition and
    develop a new growing point.

4
Asexual Propagation (vegetative)
Totipotency -----That is each cell retains the
potential (and genetic information) to generate
an entire plant So we can generate whole plant
from a leaf, stem, roots..

Why we go for?? Asexual Propagation
1.Propagation of seedless plants, i.e. bananas,
figs, oranges and grape 2. Avoidance of long
juvenile periods as in Citrus can take 5 to 10
years to bloom. 3. Disease control
Meristematic regions in shoot tips can sometimes
outgrow virus infections because of rapid cell
division. These regions can be excised and
placed into tissue culture to propagate
virus-free plants. 4. Rapid production of some
plant materials, especially trees
6
Asexual Propagation (vegetative)
  • Budding
  • Division
  • Grafting
  • Cuttings
  • Stolons
  • Suckers
  • Layering
  • Separation

7
Stolons
Strawberry..
-an above-ground stem that has buds that sprout
to form new shoots, forming a new,
genetically-identical plant.
--The strawberry plant clones during springtime
by producing stolons around the mother plant.

8
Suckers
Black berry suckers..
-is a root that emerges from the ground and sends
up a shoot which supports the plant.

Layering
Grapes, Litchi
Tip Layering - Bend tips until they touch the
ground, and then cover them with soil. Air
Layering - Wounding or Girdling to produce roots

Division
Ginger..
-Specialized stem in which main axis grows
horizontally at or just below ground surface.
--Cut off individual sections at point of
attachment to the rhizome. Each piece must have a
lateral bud.

13
Cuttings
--Produce adventitious roots. Cells near the
wound must dedifferentiate and create a new
meristematic region.

--3 different types of cuttage propagation
--Tip --Stem, and --Leaf

14
--Consist of a stem segment with the terminal bud
intact.
--terminal bud has been removed for stem cuttings
intact.

Leaf Cuttings
Peperomia
The pot with cuttings inserted about one inch
into the media and watered in. Note that the
cuttings are not in contact with each other or
the sides of the pot.
