Abstract
  • Lock and Key System is archaic
  • New technologies, either incorporating memory or
biometrics, can help security move beyond the
antiquated system of lock and key.
  • Memorization adds security
  • But passwords can be forgotten, shared, or
    observed
  • Most effective security is Biometrics
  • Biometric technology is a way to achieve fast and
user-friendly authentication with a high level
    of accuracy

5
What is Biometrics?
  • Biometrics is an automated method of recognizing
a person based on a physiological or behavioral
    characteristic.
  • It can be used to uniquely identify one person
    from another.
  • Includes fingerprints, speech, face, retina,
iris, handwritten signature, hand geometry, and
    wrist veins
  • By using an attribute of the body, security is
improved because there is no room for human error
  • Using Biometrics security will increase system
    effectiveness.

6
Design Objectives
  • The Digital Door Assistant will
  • Provide a convenient, reliable, and secure
alternative to archaic key-entry door systems
  • Utilize accurate fingerprint identification in
order to allow access for authorized users
  • Perform as an embedded system geared for
    residential use

Choice of Biometrics
9
Choice of Fingerprint Device
  • The MV1200 fingerprint scanner
  • Unlike many other scanners, is made for embedded
    devices
  • Is capable of interfacing with a microcontroller
  • Contains an accurate identification algorithm
    onboard
  • Allows for administration over templates
    (addition and deletion)

Choice of Microcontroller
  • Most simple microcontrollers, like the
MC68HC11A8, will have the functionality we need
    for our design
  • Documentation from Bioscrypt will finalize
    microcontroller decision

Limitations
  • Power Failure
  • A backup system is needed
  • Extensive testing is required
  • Weather conditions such as rain
  • Physical modification to packaging

18
Project Schedule
19
Target Customer
  • Suburban families
  • Include as a package in new home constructions
  • 1,200,000 new homes in 2000
  • Direct mailing to electrical contractors
  • Trade show product promotion

20
Cost Estimation
  • Initial 5 of market share
  • Estimated peak of 25 of market share in year 6

21
Product Cost/Price
  • Material, fixed and variable costs
  • DDA sale price
