Title: Making a Straight Thru Cable

1
Making a Straight Thru Cable
2
This PowerPoint is to show the procedures on how
to safely, efficiently make a cable that adheres
to the 568A Ethernet Standards. These cables
are to be used for Ethernet (10BaseT) and Fast
Ethernet (100BaseT) Pay attention, the quality
and speed of your connection depends on the
quality of your cable!
3
Tools
  • Electricians Scissors are for cutting and
    stripping insulation
  • Dikes or Diagonal Cutters are used for cutting
    cable

4
Tools
  • Crimpers are used for cutting wire, stripping
insulation and crimping the connector to the wire

5
Tools
  • Cable Testers are used to check the continuity of
    cables
  • These testers only check whether current will
pass through the cable, it does not check the
    resistance of the cable

6
Tools
  • Multi meters are used to check the resistance of
    the finished cable.
  • Low resistance is desired

7
Lets Get Started!
  • Organize your tools and work area
  • Observe all safety precautions
  • Measure twice and cut once
  • Add an extra twelve inches to allow room

8
Pull wire
  • Pull wire smoothly from the box
  • The box must be standing up
  • If the wire starts to kink, stop pulling and
    correct the kink
  • Kinks in the wire can cause poor signal quality

Box in Upright position
9
  • Use the electricians scissors or the dikes to cut
    the cable
  • Add 12 inches to your measurements

10
  • Expose about one inch of the inner wires
  • Be careful to not strip the insulation off the
    inner wires

11
Another Way to Strip the Jacket
  • Expose about one inch of the inner wires
  • Be careful to not strip the insulation off the
    inner wires

Comb Out the Wires
  • Put the wires in order from left to right
  • Using your thumb and forefinger, comb out the
wires and order according to the 568-A Standard

14
  • Using the dikes or electrician scissors, trim the
    wires to an even haircut
  • Leave only ½ of unjacketed wires

Trim the Wires

Slide the Wires into the Connector
  • After the wires are in the correct order, slowly
slide them in the RJ 45 connector
  • Hold the connector with the prong on the bottom

Bottom
16
Push the Wires in All the Way
  • The wires need to go all the way to the front of
    the connector
  • They are clear to allow you to see the ends
  • Be sure the the jacket extends to under the
    crimping area

17
The Side View
Ends need to go to the front
The side view is useful to determine if the wires
have extended all the way to the front of the
RJ-45
18
Push the Connector and Wire into the Crimper
  • Orient the connector to the crimper
  • Hold the wire firmly
  • Put inward pressure on the wire

19
Crimp
  • Crimp the connector with both hands
  • Dont over crimp by forcing down on a table or
floor, because you can push the contacts too
deeply in the RJ 45 so they wont contact when
    connected in the jack

20
Test the Continuity
  • The cable tester check to each wire is connected
  • When you push the button, it checks the next wire
    in line
  • If done properly, the no. 1 should light up the
no. 1 on the other side

21
  • What to do if you have a Problem
  • First, determine what went wrong
  • If the lights dont match on each side, (no.1 on
the left side and no. 2 on the right) you will
have to look at which, or both, sides are wired
incorrectly. After you determine which is wired
incorrectly, cut off that end and get a new
connector from you teacher and start again
  • If one side lights, but the other side doesnt,
try re-crimping the side that didnt light and
    re-test
