  • ACM Fellow
  • chairman of the Stony Brook CS Department from
    1996-1999
  • Main research focus Logic programming
  • Students Juliana Freire, Utah

8
Main project XSB-- a logic programming and
deductive database system
  • An open source logic programming system, extends
Prolog with new semantic and operational features
    http//xsb.sourceforge.net/
  • Based on the use of Tabled Logic Programming or
    tabling
  • Useful for parsing, program analysis,
    model-checking, data mining and Diagnosis

9
Intuition of tabling
  • Cache of logic computation
  • Cache the subgoal of a computation
  • During computation of a goal to a logic program,
each subgoal S is registered in a table the first
time it is called, and unique answers to S are
added to the table as they are derived.
  • When subsequent calls are made to S, the
evaluation ensures that answers to S are read
from the table rather than being re-derived using
    program clauses.
  • Further, cache other global elements of a
computation in the table, e.g., information about
whether one subgoal depends on another, and
whether the dependency is through negation

10
Michael Kifer
  • 1985 PhD, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel
  • Main research focus declarative languages for
    data, object-oriented databases, query
    optimization, logic programming
  • Test of Time Award from ACM SIGMOD
  • 1999 F-Logic A Higher Order Language for
Reasoning About Objects, Inheritance, and Scheme.

12
Main project Flora-- An object-oriented
knowledge base language and application
development environment
  • http//flora.sourceforge.net/
  • Flora-2 a dialect of F-logic with numerous
extensions, e.g., meta-programming in the style
of HiLog and logical updates in the style of
    Transaction Logic
  • Applications of Flora-2 include intelligent
    agents, Semantic Web, ontology management,
    integration of information, and others
  • Relies on the XSB inference engine
