How to Win Friends and Influence People
  • According to Dale Carnegie, the dog is the
greatest winner of friends the world has ever
known. He has no ulterior motive, will
practically jump out of his skin to show you how
much he likes you, and begins to wag his tail if
you get within 10 feet of him. So should we
study this greatest winner of friends to learn
    how to influence others?

4
Always be Sincere (Whether You Mean it or Not)
  • According to Weinberg
  • Dale Carnegie was one the greatest hypocrites
    ever
  • Winning friends or influencing others through
memorized rules is practicing the lowest form of
    hypocritical deception

5
Survival Rules
  • Everyone has rules for dealing with others, even
if they dont know where the rules originated
    from
  • These rules influence our behavior and the way we
    react to others
  • We dont view them as rules but Universal Truths

6
Weinbergs Rules (when he was 10)
  • Dont trust people who say they want to help you.
  • Beware of anybody who tries to teach you
    universal truths.
  • Both of the above rules kept Weinberg from
    accepting Dale Carnegies leadership.

7
Meta-Rules
  • Control the flow of ideas about rules
  • Determine how readily we can learn new rules, or
    unlearn old rules
  • Determine how easily we can change the way we
    interact with others

8
Transforming Rules into Guides
  • A step-by-step transformation to produce a more
    effective version of the rule
  • State the rule clearly and explicitly.
  • Acknowledge the rules survival value and strike
a bargain with your unconscious mind.
  • Give yourself a choice.
  • Change from certainty to possibility.
  • Change the rule from totality to non-totality.
  • Change from general to particular.

9
Becoming Genuinely Interested in Other People
  • Without this genuine interest, any action will be
    mere hypocritical gimmicks
  • Weinbergs rules prevented him from being
    genuinely interested in other people

10
Conclusion
  • Read Dale Carnegie if you have a well-developed
self-esteem or as a test of your self-esteem
  • If you want to learn to motivate others, the best
way is to transform your survival rules that make
you feel as worthless and powerless as a whipped
    dog.
