6
When do we use this tense?
7
Past continuous, function
  • To show an action which was happening at a time
    when another was completed.
  • while, when and as.
  • eg While I was walking home, it stopped raining.
  • He was doing his homework when I came in.

8
The past continuous is used to show an
action that was happening at a certain time in
the past. eg Paul was doing his homework at
8pm last night. The girls were practicing for
the concert all the afternoon.

9
to show two separate actions that happening at
the same time in the past.
  • e.g. They were singing while Mei Lan was playing
    the piano.
  • While we were eating, they were dancing.

10
to replace the present continuous tense in
indirect speech(????).
  • e.g.
  • John said that he was doing his assignments.
  • Mary told me that she was watching TV.

11
-ing forms
  • with most verbs we add ing
  • e.g. going, singing
  • answering
  • walking
  • jumping

12
  • With verbs that end(??) with ie, we change ie
    to ying
  • e.g. lie lying
  • die dying
  • tie tying

13
  • With the verbs that end with a consonant (??)
-e, we deleted the e and add ing
  • egwrite writing
  • smile smiling
  • come coming
  • live living
  • take taking
  • queue - queuing

14
  • With verbs that end with one vowel 1 consonant
    (??) (g, m, n, p, t, d), we double the
    consonant
  • eg getting, running, swimming, jogging, kidding,
    stoppingetc.

15
  • But note that we do not double the consonant
    (??),
  • When it is a y or w,
  • eg staying, buying, borrowing, playing,
  • When the last syllable is not stressed
  • visiting, listening, wondering,

16
  • But note also that we double the l at the end
of verbs, when the last syllable(??) is not
    stressed(??)
  • e.g. travel travelling
