Title: HyShot Scramjet Project

1
HyShot Scramjet Project
  • University of Queensland, Australia
  • 30 Oct 2001

2
What is a Scramjet?
  • Engine which breathes oxygen at hypersonic speed
  • Supersonic fuel combustion
  • Needs hydrogen to run
  • Gives off water as only byproduct
  • Lighter than conventional engine while producing
    same power
  • Reduce fuel load significantly by using oxygen
    from atmosphere

3
Scramjet History
  • NASA X-43A (Hyper-X)
  • 185 million
  • Phase I unmanned
  • 2 Jun 01 flight failure
  • destruct
  • U of Q HyShot
  • 1.5 million
  • 3 yr design and construction
  • COTS
  • International assistance

4
So what?
  • Flight at virtually any speed and altitude
  • Escape inner atmosphere and coast in near
    permanent orbit
  • Flight from Sydney to London in 2 hours
  • Lower cost of launching small payloads
  • (e.g. Comm satellites)
  • Technology revolution?
  • Uses atmospheric oxygen compressed during ascent

5
Mission Profile
  • Terrier-Orion Mk 70 rocket
  • Max liftoff spd Mach 8
  • Liftoff accl 22 g (60 g for 0.5 s)
  • Apogee 330 km
  • Nose is pushed over, cone ejected (Bang-Bang
    maneuver)
  • Max descent spd Mach 7.6
  • Scramjet stage
