Introduction about VSAT
  • What is VSAT?
  • VSAT stands for Very Small Aperture Terminal. It
is an earthbound station used in satellite
communications of data, voice and video signals.
  • Any dish from .6 to 3.8 meters in diameter is
    technically termed a VSAT.
  • The VSAT designate both the support for a
permanent connection through a parabolic dish
directly to a satellite and the connection
    itself.
  • A VSAT system is made of two parts
  • A transceiver is an emitting/receiving antenna
placed outside a building that points towards the
communications satellite, or transponder. It is
    also called outdoor unit (ODU).
  • A device placed inside a building that acts as an
interface between the antenna and computer
equipment. It also is called indoor unit (IDU).

How does the VSAT work?
  • Connection is established via satellite
according to the frequency established between
the building equipped with the VSAT system and
    the Internet routing infrastructure thus
providing costumer with a permanent high-speed
connection or a private high-speed link.

Two types of VSAT
  • C Band VSAT
  • Heavy installation, large antennas (more than 2
    meters)
  • Better stability against atmospheric disturbances
  • Infrastructure solutions for telecom operators
  • Solutions for long distance retransmission of
    radar data
  • Excellent for private networks
  • Ku Band VSAT
  • Easy installation
  • Smaller size antenna (1.2 to 1.8 m)
  • Easily moved
  • Ideal for Internet access in enclosed areas
  • Secured energy
