Title: WHAT IS STRESS

1
WHAT IS STRESS ?
  • Daily responses to change or surprise
  • The feelings we experience when tension is
consistently high and adrenaline has been taking
effect over a sustained period of time

2
Fight or Flight
  • Our physical reaction to stress developed
thousands of years ago, and has changed very
    little since
  • In response to a perceived threat, we produce
large amounts of adrenaline which causes our
    hearts to beat faster
  • This diverts more blood to the brain and muscles
so we can think on our feet, fight, or run away

3
Primitive Humans
  • When confronted with a hostile wild animal the
fight or flight response was essential for
    their survival
  • With these responses, the extra adrenaline in the
body was used up, and the bodys natural balance
    soon restored

4
Present Day Humans
  • We tend to experience stress under less energetic
conditions and are unable to burn off our stress
by running or fighting, therefore the adrenaline
continues to build up in our bodies
  • Unless we take positive steps to release
ourselves from its effects, we may develop
harmful symptoms, which can permanently damage
our physical health and prey dangerously on our
    emotional well-being
  • -dr. sarah brewer
  • Examples of less energetic conditions
  • Negotiating a business deal
  • going to college
  • passing an exam

Healthy Stress or Distress?
  • The point at which healthy stress becomes
distress varies for each of us
  • Imagine that you have a bag of stones slung over
one shoulder. Each stone represents a worry,
such as a difficult job or an unhappy
relationship. The bag is so heavy that it
threatens to throw you off balance and you have
to keep putting it down. BUT, if you make an
effort to stand tall, take regular breaks,
distribute the load evenly and carry the bag
squarely on your back, you will be able to
complete your journey with far less discomfort.
  • The same is true for stress. It is often not
external events that make us feel overloaded or
    ill, but the
  • way in which we cope with them
