WHAT IS RUBBER?
  • It is white in colour and it does not smell.
  • Rubber is made from the milky-white juice of
    rubber tree.
  • The milky-white juice is called latex.
  • The original home of the rubber tree was at the
forests of the Amazon Basin, Brazil in South
    America.

RUBBER IN MALAYSIA
  • Rubber became Malayas most important product
    and export.
  • Malaysia still produces most natural rubber in
    the world.

4
THE METHOD OF PRODUCING RUBBER
  • Tapping means cutting the bark of rubber tree
with a special knife to collect the latex.

5
Some latex is sent to the factories
  • At the factory acid is mixed with the rubber to
    make it thick.
  • This process is called coagulation.
  • Then the latex is divided into slabs of rubber
    about 40 mm thick

4A BAGS OF HEAVEACRUMB RUBBER
  • Slabs of latex are minced or chopped into small
    pieces or crumbs.
  • This rubber is called heveacrumb.
  • These small pieces dry in just a few hours.
  • They are then packed into plastic bags.
  • These bags are lighter and cleaner than the bales
    of sheet rubber.
  • They are given a special mark RSM.
  • This means that the rubber is of a high quality.

4B - BALES READY FOR EXPORT
  • The slabs of rubber are rolled into thin sheets
and dried in a smokehouse for about four days.
  • Then the sheets are packed into bales or bundles.
  • They are ready to go to the factories that make
rubber goods or to the ports to be exported.

THE RUBBER GROWING AREAS OF WEST MALAYSIA
  • Large companies planted rubber on large farms
    called plantations or estates.
  • Ordinary farmers or smallholders also began to
    plant rubber as a cash.
  • A cash crop is a crop that can be exchanged for
    money.
  • Today smallholders produced 60 percent of
    Malaysias rubber.
  • Most of the countrys rubber still comes from the
    western part of West Malaysia.
