Why did it all have to change?

• National Numeracy Strategy (NNS) introduced
  Autumn 1999.
• Why?
• To raise standards through whole class teaching
  with a strong emphasis on mental calculation.
• How?
• Appointment of Numeracy Consultants/ Teacher
  training
• Structured yearly teaching programmes key
  objectives
• A daily dedicated maths lesson
• And again
• NNS and NLS now fall under the broader
• Primary National Strategy.
• Schools currently awaiting the announcement of
  the renewed Primary Framework for literacy and
  mathematics
