1
Supergroups
  • 1966 - Present

2
What is a Supergroup?
  • The majority of the members of the groups have
previously had significant success in a group or
    individually.
  • Example Cream
  • Jack Bruce (Manfred Mann)
  • Ginger Baker (Graham Bond Organization)
  • Eric Clapton (Yardbirds, John Mayall and the
    Blues Breakers)

3
Common Trends
  • Most Supergroups have been formed as one-time
projects, concerts, or out of the ashes of a
    fallen group.
  • Most Supergroups only release a few albums before
breaking up and joining other projects.
  • Unlike most contemporary music groups, each
member of the group shares the fame and is well
    known by their audience.

4
Keys to Success
  • While many Supergoups are formed, only a select
    few achieve significant commercial success.
  • Each member must bring something inherent to the
    group.
  • The ability to create a new distinct sound.
  • Marketability The music cannot carry the group.
  • The group must show a degree of change. Their
    music should show a progression.

5
An Interesting Beginning
  • John Entwistle (The Who) claimed in a 1999
    interview,
  • one of the papersI think it was probably
Melody Maker, because they liked doing things
like that ran a poll, Who would be in the
ultimate pop supergroup? And it ended up with
me on bass, Eric Clapton on guitar, and Ginger
Baker on drums. I dont remember who else was
voted in but a few month later, The Cream came
along, and I did wonder if somebody was maybe
believing too much of their own press.

6
Beginning Continued
  • Ginger Baker (drummer, Graham Bond Organization)
approaches Eric Clapton and asks him to play
guitar in a band he is putting together. Clapton
agrees but only on the stipulation that Jack
Bruce (bassist, Manfred Mann) joins the group as
    well.
  • Baker scoffs at the idea because of his and
Bruces chaotic past while playing together in
    the Graham Bond Organization.
  • Eventually Baker and Bruce put aside there
differences and agree to try and make the band
    work.

7
Cream 1966-1968
  • Fresh Cream (1966)
  • Rollin and Tumblin
  • Muddy Watters (1950)
  • Blues Traditional
  • Creams version

8
Modifying the classics
  • Creams ability to use the 12 bar blues and
modify it gave them a sound all their own.
  • Sunshine of your love (1967)
  • Uses 12 bar blues progression to model motivic
    riff heard throughout song.
  • Uses the dominant chord A as an opening for the
chorus. Chorus allows for extended jams that
would cater to the artists brilliant playing.

9
Crosby, Stills, and Nash (1968)
  • Graham Nash (The Hollies)
  • David Crosby (The Byrds)
  • Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield)
  • Neil Young (Buffalo Springfield)
  • Used harmonious singing and folk guitar create a
    unique sound.
  • Marakesh Express (1968)

10
A trio becomes a quartet
  • Neil Young joins band in 1969
  • Déjà Vu is released in 1970
  • Almost Cut my Hair
  • Harder, edgier sound and use of electric
    instruments.

11
Audioslave (2001-2007)
  • Chris Cornell (Soundgarden)
  • Tim Commerford, Tom Morello, Brad Wilk (Rage
    Against the Machine)
  • Cochise (2002) First Single off of Debut album
  • Riff based song that sounds similar to guitar
playing heard in a lot of RATM songs.
  • Features Cornells soulful singing but for the
most part sound like a Soundgarden / Rage hybrid.

12
Cream Re-born?
  • Audio Slave and Cream share many similarities.
  • Both groups only released three albums before
    disbanding.
  • Similar to Creams Disraeli Gears, Audioslaves
second effort, Out of Exile, showed some growth
    in the groups sound.
  • Doesnt Remind me
  • Original Sound

13
