Aim
  • By the end of this session you will be able to
    identify what a balanced health meal is.

Exercise
  • To improve your well-being we should try to do
    something at least 3 times a week
  • Walk whenever possible
  • Have a swim at your local leisure centre
  • Enjoy taking part in team sports at school. This
    could be anything like ice skating, roller
    blading or riding your bike

Water
  • Water helps you
  • Be cool
  • Have more energy
  • Have fresh breath
  • It also helps you to concentrate, re-hydrates
    your skin, helping to keep it smooth and wrinkle
    free

Carbohydrates
  • Starchy carbs. These include
  • Bread, Potatoes, Pasta, Rice,
  • Breakfast cereals
  • What do they do? They give us energy released
    throughout the day. We need food from this group
    to help us to concentrate and have the energy for
    sport and activity also to keep us healthy.

Do you eat breakfast?
  • If your answer is yes, you have given yourself an
    excellent start as this is a very important meal
    of the day. It gives you a kick start.

Meat, fish and alternatives
  • Chicken / turkey
  • Beef / lamb / pork
  • Beans / lentils / split peas
  • Eggs / fish / nuts
  • These are important foods for your health. They
    give you healthy blood and healthy skin colour.
    They help you grow, give you energy and fight off
    bugs.

Fruit and Veg
  • What is a portion
  • 1piece of fruit e.g. banana, apple, 2 smaller
    fruits e.g. kiwi or satsuma, 3 tablespoons of
    veg, 1 dessert bowl of salad or 1 small glass of
    fruit juice
  • If you eat 3 or more portions a day you are more
    likely to have better skin and
  • hair and be healthier

Dairy Foods
  • 1 calcium portion
  • 250 ml glass of milk
  • 1 large pot of yoghurt
  • 1 matchbox size piece of cheese
  • These foods provide calcium
  • If you have 3 calcium portions a day you will
    have stronger nails, teeth and bones

Fatty and Sugary Foods
  • Biscuits, cakes, chocolate, sweets,
  • butter, marg, oil, pop, crisps
  • We all like foods from this group. This is okay
    if you have something from all of the other food
    groups to ensure you have a balanced diet.
  • If you consume 1 portion of chips everyday for a
    year this is the amount of fat you would have
    consumed.

Competition
  • Design a hot meal deal that is balanced,
    colourful, attractive, cost effective, and above
    all good to eat.
  • Collect a handout before you leave.
