What is Wimba Classroom?
  • online meeting room with group facilitation tools
  • Text, audio and video
  • Shared whiteboard to display PowerPoint, screen
    grabs and draw on
  • show web pages and screen sharing
  • Private breakout rooms
  • polls and surveys
  • record and replay sessions
  • Phone simulcast for voice if you cant connect
    via internet

Text Chat
  • Public Chat
  • Select To Main room
  • messages that can be viewed by everyone.
  • Private Chat
  • Select To the selected person from the pull-down
    menu
  • private messages for a specific person
  • To Pause the Text Chat so you can read without
    scrolling
  • Click the Pause icon located to the right of the
    chat message field. 
  • When you are ready to receive new messages again,
    click the Play icon to resume chat.

People window
  • shows the names of other participants and if they
    are talking or using video
  • shows ticks or crosses,
  • shows your position in the queue if you have
    raised your hand
  • shows emoticons which you can use to provide
    feedback to the speaker

Erase last thing added
Erases all drawings on the screen

Other eBoard tools
  • Undo last action
  • Erase all drawings on the slide
  • Clear the eBoard
  • Import a picture
  • Save the eBoard to snapshots folder
  • Show a screen grab
  • wait for Controls to be shown (download)
  • drag striped rectangle to area
  • click Send
  • Enable or Disable eBoard tools

Media Bar
  • The Media Bar contains the following items
  • NetStats status of your Internet connection
  • Talk button (or holding down the CTRL key)
    initiates your microphone and video broadcast (if
    the Video Window is open and you have opted to
    transmit video)
  • Volume meters coloured bars indicating you are
    receiving or sending audio. Click to change
    volume sliders.
  • Camera button opens or closes the Video Window
  • Telephone Simulcast backup option if you do not
    have a headset or microphone
  • Options Menu select different audio inputs or
    change the volume and other advanced audio/video
    settings

5 steps to using your web cam
  • Plug in cam and use OPTIONS menu to select your
    cam (may require Wimba restart)
  • Click the camera to open the video window (shown
    in red)
  • Preview your web cam in the lower right of the
    video window (only you can see the preview)
  • Click eye to enable your web cam (shows as
    "closed" or "open" eye).
  • If enabled, the video will switch to you when you
    hold down the CTRL button and are the loudest
    speaker.

Talking and turn taking
  • Hold down the TALK button (or the CRTL key) to
    talk and release it when you have finished
  • If we are speaking over each other we will use
    hand raising
  • click the Hand at the bottom of the window to
    raise your hand and join the queue to speak
  • the person who is first in queue can then talk by
    holding down the CTRL key (if you are asked a
    question you can respond without raising your
    hand)
  • when finished lower your Hand and introduce the
    next person

Map of the world
Click the 'T' then add your name to the map You
can use the line to draw an arrow The undo
(curved arrow) will undo the last action Please
don't use ERASE or CLEAR as it will erase the
whole screen

  • click HELP at the bottom right of the window
  • browse through the help system for 30 seconds to
    get an idea of what is available

Participant or presenter status
  • generally there will only be one presenter (the
    presenter's name is shown in bold)
  • clicking in the last column makes the person
    a presenter and show the presenters console on
    the right

To show a web page
  • sometimes the facilitator might show a web page
    in the content frame or in a new window (everyone
    can then browse)
  • to show a web page
  • click Web gt type a URL into the URL to show field
    gt select a new Window for the location to display
    in gt click Show Web Page gt when your page is
    opened you can tell people why you choose it

Breakout rooms
  • several breakout rooms allowing you to work in
    small groups
  • generally the facilitator will move you into a
    Breakout room
  • if you can see the Breakout Rooms tab (top right)
    you can move yourself by dragging your name into
    one of the rooms
  • if you can't drag yourself, type a message and
    ask someone else to do so

  • Reduced the tyranny of distance an excellent
    tool
  • feel like you are actually studying in a class
  • an invaluable tool to assist my off-campus
    studies an excellent medium, especially for off
    campus students
  • I sincerely hope that Wimba sessions are used
    throughout my degree as the benefit of being
    able to interact with lecturers and other
    students is invaluable to those of us who are not
    able to attend 'on campus' lectures ... the more,
    the better!!
  • I found the Wimba sessions absolutely fantastic

  • perhaps you can co-run a session with the another

  • post a note to your courses discussion forums
    encouraging people to particiate in an
    orientation
  • this is a good way to join your own online study
    group which you can work with at any time
  • send a Moodle message to Peter Evans if you are
    interested in being a Wimba mentor

Doing more with Wimba Classroom
  • ask your lecturer to setup a drop in room in your
    course (give everyone access to the presentation
    tools) and a discussion forum so you can arrange
    to meet other students at any time to discuss any
    topic
  • organise to meet in the drop in room in the Wimba
    Classroom Orientation course
  • ask your lecturer if they could run a question
    and answer session or tutorial in the course
    (perhaps before assessment or the examination)
  • other things that meet your learning needs

Options gt Bandwidth
  • Wimba attempts to work within the limits of the
    bandwidth you have
  • you can change your bandwidth requirements
    anytime via Options gt Bandwidth Options gt between
    256Kbps and 32Kbps
  • try it with an incoming video stream and it will
    blur out as bandwidth is throttled
  • if the video is interfering with the audio you
    can close the video window

Static PowerPoint on the eBoard
  • Click the import button to the right of Go then
    browse to your PowerPoint (.ppt or .pptx)
  • Import and when done close the window
  • Select PowerPoint from Content dropdown then and
    click Go
  • slide navigation
  • double click the slide or use orange arrow keys
  • P to preview then Push it where you want it to
    go
  • you can draw on slides then erase them then
    redisplay them

Facilitator can start screen sharing
  • generally their own screen, but they can share
    others (with permission)
  • can display the shared screen on
  • eBoard or
  • a new window
  • you have to manage the overlapping window
  • if you close the new window you can reopen it by
    clicking AppShare in your Wimba media bar
  • they can give you control of the shared screen
    (with permission)

Screen sharing movie
  • go to http//wimba.com/services/instructor/classro
    om/
  • scroll down to the Quicklet section
  • click Application Sharing (Video)
  • run the movie and put a tick next to your name
    when it is finished

  • when AppShare Status is shown select
  • whose screen you want to share
  • where to display it (eBoard or New Window)
  • click Begin Sharing
  • When AppShare Selection is shown select what you
    want to share
  • a window (drag the target crosshairs to the
    window you want to share)
  • screen area (whatever is in the stripped
    rectangle is shown)
  • full desktop (not multiple monitors)
  • Click OK then Update sharing

  • To give control to someone tick the Cursor
    Control column next to their name
  • they will be sent a confirmation
  • To share another person's screen put a tick in
    the Sharing Desktop column next to their name
  • they will be asked to confirm
  • click End Sharing to end sharing

  • you can use the People windowfor quick responses
  • Polls can be prepared before the start of the
    session
  • multiple choice, or short answer
  • named or anonymous
  • show or hide results
