UNFCCC COP 14 Poznan, 6 December 2008
2Energy in Turkey
- Today in the world the most important energy
resources are fossil originated resources such as
petroleum, natural gas and coal. - Turkey is poor in terms of those resources and
depends on abroad. - 78 of the energy is met by the imports. For
this, annualy an average of 50 billion is spent.
3Why Renewable Energy ?
- The prices of petroleum and natural gas are
getting higher and
the drops are occasionally. -
- On the other hand
- Fossil energy sources are about to run out.
- The main reason of global warming and climate
change is fossil fuels. - The world is looking for alternative renewable
local energy resources that pollute the
environment less.
4Biomass Reserve in Turkey
- The available biomass amount in Turkey is around
117 million tons. In case of its assesment it
will be met approximately annual 32 Mtoep. - It is estimated that total available bioenergy
potential is about 17.2 million ton-equal
petroleum.
5Biomass Reserve in Turkey
- In our forests, 13 million m3 wood is produced
annually. In this calculation only the trunks of
the trees are taken into account. - Branches, crown covers, and roots are excluded.
- According to FAO, the amount of the remnant is
about 10,5 million m3.
6- Biomass Reserve in Turkey
- Some of the biomass which remains in forests is
used by forest villagers for heating and for
similiar uses. - Consequently it is considered that annual
- 7 million m3 biomass can be used for production
of biomass energy.
7Biomass Applications in Turkey
-
- Çaycuma Paper Mill generates its daily 10 MW
energy need from the wood barks which are the
waste of the materials used in paper production.

8Biomass application in Gelibolu Forest
Sub-District
- Wood residues, tree roots and another materials
derived from burned areas are used for producing
heating energy in Gelibolu Forest Sub-District
Administration building and public housing.
9Biomass Applications
- Biomass derived from tree roots and tree
branches and - its granulated state
10Biomass Applications
- Heating boiler that used for producing
- heating energy by burning biomass

11Biomass application in Kozak
Forest Sub-District
Stone Pinea covers the most part of the area in
Kozak Forest Sub-District.The most important
source of income for the villagers is obtained
from Stone Pinea cones production. The
sub-district building is heated with the
materials which are the waste of the cones
remains after production.

13Biomass applications in Forest Regional
Directorate of Bolu
Heating energy need of Aydinpinar Forest
Sub-district administration building and 4 public
housing will be provided with unused residues
emerged after harvesting. It is estimated that
usage of 250 kg biomass per day will be enough to
heat both the administration building and the
public housings.
Biomass Activities in Forest Regional
Directorate of Bolu
14 General Directorate of Forestry 2009 Targets
About Biomass-I
- These activities started in 2008 and this process
will continue wherever possible and lucrative. The
system using harvesting residues, stone cones,
tree roots and the other suitable materials for
energy production will be generalized
immediately.
15GDF 2009 Targets About Biomass - II
- Identifying unusual harvesting residues in the
areas with high rawmaterial potential and with
intensive forestry activities and facilitating
their use in biomass production. - The use of brush like vegetation which blocks the
reneregation activities, in a way that will not
harm the naturel balance.
16 GDF 2009 Targets About Biomass - II
- Identification of nonproductive agricultural
areas to be used for agroforestry and making
legal arrangements to encourage enterpreneurs. - Tax exemption and incentive facilites will be
provided in the establishment of biomass power
plant which will produce electric and heat energy
from biomass and in the sales of produced
electric and heat energy.
17 GDF 2009 Targets About Biomass - III
-
- Private sector will be encouraged on biomass
production. - Usage of gas stoves will be generalized given by
the governmental organization to forest
villagers. - Adaptation of the current legal arrangements on
biomass will be provided according to EU norms.
18 GDF 2009 Targets About Biomass - IV
- Credit will be given to citizens in order to
carry on energy forestry and agricultural
activities on own lands. - Joint projects will be carried out with
universities in collaboration.
19 Lets cooperate to produce biomass
