Captive Portal Automated Policy Management
2
Agenda
  • Introductions
  • Product Overview
  • Value Proposition
  • Business Strategy
  • Opportunity to Accelerate
  • Discussion Recommendations
  • Next Steps

3
What Are We?
  • We automate the enforcement of acceptable use
    policies on a network
  • We Provide a Captive Portal instantly visible
to every student gaining network access in a
    university setting
  • Any organization that has exposure to untrusted
or mobile computing devices is a potential
    client. (PDAs, Phones, PCs)
  • We can be easily integrated into a companys
    existing network infrastructure
  • We are network and software vendor independent

4
What is the Problem?
  • Colleges and Universities face
  • Rampant virus infection caused by students
bringing in their own personal computers.
  • Out of date security patches.
  • Runaway bandwidth consumption by students
    downloading illegal content (music, movies,
    games, etc.).
  • Unauthorized usage especially over wireless
    networks
  • Balancing Security Best Practices with Academic
    Freedom
  • Adequate Budget to implement tools to assist this
    process

5
What is the Solution?
  • Impulse has developed a security solution aimed
at colleges and universities to address their
    specific needs
  • Allows only authorized compliant users to access
    university systems and networks.
  • Promote Legal Acquisition of Licensed Content
  • Captive Portal (not a pop up) that offers
marketing support for vendors providing the
    solution to the University

6
How does it work?
Internet traffic to the school comes through a
security layer (a firewall) to a router where a
switch connects individual users.
The Impulse System seamlessly plugs into the
router and blocks access to users who fail policy.
Firewall (Security)

Users hook up to the internet through the switch

Why Impulse?
Customer Value Proposition without the Captive
Portal
  • Exclusively focused on the Higher Education
    Sector
  • Scalable, distributed architectural design
  • Integrates with existing and future network
    infrastructure in an out-of-line approach
  • Does not represent a Single-Point-of-Failure to
    the campus network (Fail-open design)
  • Does not represent a performance bottleneck to
campus network traffic. Ability to update/change
    without affecting network service-level
    maintenance windows
  • Offers an extensive array of integrated policy
modules managed from a single product
  • Low Total Cost of Acquisition and Ownership (TCO)
  • Turnkey Implementation Services (planning,
    testing, on-site installation, training and
    deployment support)
  • 7/24 on-going hardware and software monitoring,
    support, maintenance and update services

Policy Modules
POLICY MODULE KEYFEATURES
Authentication and Registration Prevent unauthorized users from accessing the network while registering authorized student devices.
Policy Notification Displays Acceptable Use Polices and gives user an option to accept institution polices prior to accessing network. Allows Institution the opportunity to audit and log users acceptance of Institution policy.
Anti-Virus Manages compliance with anti-virus software definitions and current inoculation files. Supports Symantec, McAfee, Sophos, Trend Micro, Panda, AVG and eTrust.
Anti-Spyware Manages compliance with anti-spyware software.
Microsoft Patch Ensures that users are at desired security patch maintenance levels.
P2P File Sharing and Music Referral Prohibits illegal P2P outbound file sharing and encourages legal online music procurement.
Network Bandwidth Monitors bandwidth usage at the policy group level with the ability to set consumption limits.
Broadcast Messaging Ability to send ad hoc or scheduled broadcast communication messages by policy group.
Management Console Provides usable insight into network performance and policy compliance and configuration.

Installed and Sold
  • The Impulse system has approximately 40
installations with 250,000 students. The schools
    include
  • Saint Leos University, University of Tampa ,
Barry University ,Florida Southern College, Lynn
University,Mars Hill College (NC), University of
Redlands, Earlham College (IN), Florida College
    (FL), Ohio Wesleyan University,Messiah College
    (PA),Williams College, University of Arizona,
Georgia College and State (5000),Florida AM Palm
    Beach Atlantic University
  • School sizes range from very large (40,000 -
University of Arizona) to very small (less than
    500 - Clearwater Christian College).

10
Customer Pipeline and Potential Growth
  • We are generating about 3-5 new installations per
    month.
  • Recently expanded our sales force to increase our
    presence in the scholastic market.
  • Potential pipeline just in the university/college
    market includes nearly 2000 schools.

11
Opportunities this can address
  • In the past, these schools have desired our
product, but securing budget was the primary
    factor that prevented adoption.
  • Eastern Washington University
  • Hendrix College
  • San Bernardino CC District
  • Saint Augustines College
  • Johnson C Smith University
  • University of Memphis
  • Harford Community College
  • Emory University
  • University of Mississippi

12
The Opportunity(Cost/Budget Cycle is an Issue)
  • In the past few years higher education has more
than realized the need for this product.
  • Many schools know a solution exists however
  • While not overly expensive (typical installation
would cost approximately 50k), cost is a
    sensitive issue.
  • Aside from the cost itself, budget cycle
procurement procedures cause delays in adoption.
  • A Media Play (Captive Marketing Portal) overcomes
    these obstacles

13
Capitalizing on the Opportunity
  • Subsidize the purchase price to the institutions
by allowing advertising through the system at
    strategic points.
  • Since users must log on to the system on a daily
basis, we can provide marketing space to a
    guaranteed audience.
