Title: Appropriate Presentations

1
Appropriate Presentations
  • Why you should careandHow to create them

2
Why Should You Care?
  • To maximize learning
  • To deliver a clear message
  • To enhance your message

3
What does this have to do with Accessibility?
  • Everything!!
  • These directions address most accessibility
    concerns.

4
The Correct Mindset
  • YOU are delivering the presentation
  • NOT your PowerPoint
  • Slides should support your content
  • Your audience wants to hear from YOU
  • not your presentation

5
Keep the design simple
  • Use simple, non-cluttered templates
  • i.e. Orbits or Refined.
  • Use easy-to-read fonts
  • i.e. Univers, Arial, or Verdana in minimum
    24-point.
  • This font is 32-point Verdana

6
Keep the design simple(cont.)
  • Limit the number of bullets
  • Limit the quantity of text per slide
  • Use relevant images
  • And only to enhance understanding

7
A Bad Example
  • Can you read this?
  • This slide is a bad example of color, font, and
image usage. We should try to avoid colors that
are not easy to read, are too small, or are just
plain ugly. The pictures here have absolutely
nothing to do with this presentation. They were
used as a joke for our funny tree at the time
of our winter holiday. The photos also confuse
the eye with the way they face and are sized.
There is way too much text on this bullet.
  • This is also bad

8
How Not to Use Color
  • Avoid bright backgrounds
  • Use easy-to-see color combinations
  • Avoid busy graphics

9
Using Color
  • Be mindful of color contrast issues
  • Dont communicate with color alone
  • Adjust the background color
  • custom colors are available

10
Contrast Example for Dark Rooms
  • Use light text on a dark background
  • Easier to see in low light
  • May need two versions

11
Using Effects
  • Avoid using too many special effects
  • They distract from your message
  • They are quite annoying

12
Think About the Environment
  • Look at your presentation room in advance
  • Test your equipment
  • Know how to control room lighting

13
Keep the Proper Focus
  • Look at your audience
  • Dont stare at or read the screen
  • Use presentation notes

14
Use of Equipment
  • Use proper slide navigation techniques
  • Use arrow keys or a remote
  • Make sure your media works
  • Test it beforehand

15
The Keystone Effect
  • You know what the slide should look like . . .
  • But you see something like this!
  • You can correct this!

16
Correcting Keystone
  • Look for the keystone buttons

17
Conclusion
  • Creating a good presentation is important
  • Pay attention to
  • Slide design
  • Text
  • Colors
  • Images
