Whats LACNIC?
  • LACNIC in an organization
  • Not for profit, incorporated in Uruguay and
    recognized as an International Organization by
    the Uruguayan Government.
  • Membership based.
  • That works under policies that are developed in
    open, transparent and participative bottom up
    processes.
  • Who manage the Numbering Internet Resources for
    the Latinamerican and the Caribbean region
    assuring that all the interested parties have an
    equitable access to those resources and working
    based in spirit of stewardship and services to
    the community.
  • Who represents the effort of the regional
    industry to manage the above mentioned resources
    in a self-regulation manner.

expected for this meeting.

  • Year 1997 Project from the Academic sector.
    Year1999 Foundation of LACNIC (AHCIET, CABASE,
    eCOM-LAC, ENRED, NIC México, NIC Brasil)
  • Year 2000 Politic consolidation of LACNIC
  • Year 2001 Setting up.
  • Year 2002 End of transition, implementation of
    own procedures and policies.
  • Year 2003 International networking.
  • Year 2004 Growing, planning and strategic view.

  • LACNIC became the forth RIR in the world in
    31/10/2002 through the ICANN Board resolution in
    Shanghai meeting.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
  • FRIDA Program www.programafrida.net
  • It is an joint initiative of LACNIC, The
    Institute for the Connectivity in The Americas
    (ICA) and the International Development Research
    Center IDRC (Canada) and supported by Internet
    Society (ISOC) and GKP.
  • Small grants program to support research in ICTs
    in Latin America. US 480 k in total.
  • 12 projects already approved.
  • Call 2005. Deadline 28th February.

  • Deployment of F-Root in LACNIC region.
  • 2 more F-Root anycast copies expected for second
    quarter.

OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES
  • New procedures available for return resources.
  • 316 ASNs holders with whom LACNIC didnt have
    contact. A direct contact campaign has held
    during 2004.
  • We also held a campaing to contact all of our
    members to
  • Inform them about elections and LACNIC VII
  • Encourage them to update their information in the
    Database.
  • Promote the suscription to our lists
  • Know what they think about our services.
  • Very good results of those campaigns during 2004.
    32 of the members participated in the election
    for board members.
  • Planning new actions of this type for May 2005.

    discussion. (WSIS, WGIG, Regional forums)

EVALUATION AFTER 2 YEARS
  • Bigger influence in internet governance
    structures
  • Direct contacts with representatives of technical
    and policy forums and with the more important
    organizations
  • Increase of Awareness and more coordination and
    experiences/knowledge exchange among operators
  • The open policy forum is an important technical
    forum in the region. Possibility to collaborate
    with others forums.
  • Funds for technical activities, training
    meetings, and events organization
  • Agreements and cooperation with others
    organizations. Establishment of funds for
    research
  • Latinoamerican technical with major international
    projection
  • Policies submitted to regional needs.
