What is SARS?

• SARS stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
• This disease is a potentially fatal form of
  pneumonia

Where did it Come From?

• The disease first emerged in the Guangdong
  province of China, but has since spread

Who has been Affected?

• As of April 8, 2003 a total of 3,300 probable
  cases of SARS has been reported
• 144 of them have been fatal from 19 countries,
  including the United States
• Within the U.S, 148 suspected cases of SARS has
  been reported

Symptoms of SARS

• SARS begins with a fever greater than
• 100 F
• After 2 to 7 days, SARS patients may develop a
  dry cough and have trouble breathing

• Other symptoms may include
• Headache
• Overall feeling of discomfort
• Body aches
• Mild respiratory symptoms

How SARS Spreads

• Public health experts think that SARS is spread
  by close contact between people
• SARS is most likely spread when someone sick with
  the disease coughs and others breath it in
• It is also possible that people can get the
  disease from toughing objects that have been
  contaminated

The Beginning of a problem

• Federal health officials say that SARS could be
  further spread in the United States

• There is not yet a vaccine against this disease
  and it may take a couple years for one to be
  developed

• The disease changes lifestyles and harms

Canada

• Canada has reported 98 probable cases and 10
  deaths
• All cases have occurred in people who have
  traveled to Asia or had contact with SARS cases
  in households, or health care facilities
• Several Canadian schools and hospitals are closed
