Major drivers for continuous improvement are
usually

• Compliance with regulations at the Municipal,
  Provincial, and Federal levels
• Pressure from associations
• General awareness from ECEA seminars
• Standards set by sector specific associations
  (Metal finishers, printers, auto, etc)
• Commitment by management to an organizational
  paradigm geared to long-term success and solid
  corporate citizenship

Utilizing one or more of the following processes
can have a positive influence on planning for
cost effective resource recovery for a company

• Paper study of their operations from easily
  accessible information
• i.e. inventory records, invoices for energy/water
  consumption, and waste manifests
• Survey of the facility (in-house or with a
  consultant)
• Comprehensive site inspection
• Full site audit of emissions, water/effluent
  quality, soil, energy consumption, health
  safety, and general housekeeping

Information Analysis

• Identify inputs/outputs to determine mass balance
• (mass input mass of products mass of sludge
  mass in wastewater mass in emissions
  unaccountable losses)
• Most companies accept a 70 30 mass balance
  ratio as indicating Were doing really well
• Can we realistically aim to achieve a ratio of 90

Metal Finishing Company Scraps Steel Waste Costs

• A local metal finishing company has succeeded in
  implementing cost effective resource recovery in
  the following ways
• Designating a specific bin for scrap metal
  recycling of brass and steel
• Offering solid brass trimmings and fixtures at
  the same price at metal plated ones to decrease
  disposal costs for waste products associated with
  the plating process
• P2 and waste reduction are key components of this
  companys business ethic

• Maximizing the use of water-based and high solids
  coatings thus reducing solvent-based paints and
  coatings

  CO2, a natural by-product of their dry ice
  cooling process

• Recycling of nickel and chromium plating sludge
  by selling to INCO

• Use of isopropyl alcohol instead of methanol as a
  cleaning agent to improve emissions control

• Selling waste collected from other companies for
  conversion to electric power

• Education is Fundamental
• Partnerships can be very effective (e.g. between
  Government, Industry ENGOS)
• Highlight examples where high environmental
  standards have led to increased innovation
• Key message is still on maximizing profitability,
  not environmental protection!
