• The most reported crime on campus is the theft of
  unsecured and unattended items.
• It takes only a few seconds for a thief to go
  into unsecured offices, conference rooms, desks,
  purses, or wallets and steal money,
  identification, and credit cards.
• Report strangers in your work area challenge
  their reason for being there by asking if you can
  help them. If they decline or you feel
  threatened, call security.

• Dont go home if someone is following you. Go to
  a fire/police station or other very public place
• Always drive with your car doors locked and
  windows up
• Do not carry valuables in the front seat of your
  car. It invites smash and grab crimes
• If you are attacked, consider yelling fire it
  may attract more attention than help or rape

• The University of Miami does not endorse any
  particular method of self-defense.
• Whatever your choice, it must be planned and
  executed without hesitation.
• Decide how you are going to handle a particular
  situation remaining calm but determined and dont
  panic.

• Pretending to faint or vomit
• Telling an attacker that you have a dreaded
  contagious disease
• Throw your money in one direction and run in the
  opposite direction

Violence In the Workplace

• Report any act of violence or threats, to your
  supervisor and security
• Dont be embarrassed
• Ignoring it will not help or better the situation
• Threats can come by phone or e-mail and sometimes
  people your are very close with

Weapons on campus

• UM policy forbids weapons on campus including in
  your car
• Concealed weapons permits preclude schools both
  public and private
• Security should be notified immediately if anyone
  other than a law enforcement officer is observed
  or suspected of carrying a weapon on campus
