Blended Teaching and Learning
Purpose To present a few ideas, hopefully
stimulating an on-going dialogue concerning the
pertinent use of digital technology in the
practice of teaching and learning.
3
The History of Teaching/Learning with Technology
from the advent of the Digital Revolution to
the present day.
A quest to efficiently and effectively recreate
traditional pedagogy and teacher/student
communication using digital technology,
eventually changing the way we teach and learn.
4
Educational Technologies to Date -
adopting/adapting current technologies -
compiling technologies into teaching/learning
packages (CMS, LMS)

5
Are we really changing the way we teach and learn?
transition period
analog
digital
In the world In education
- newspapers (NYTimes) - libraries books
(Google) - scholarly journals (Jstor) - maps
(Google) - images (ARTstor) - music - movies
(ITunes) - weather (most any info site)
information - up to date/ current -
just in time
- teaching/learning will/has to follow
6
Future a radical change in the way we teach and
learn
Future Learning Model
Beginning of a course with a number of students.
Students start with same information and goals.
Computer assisted learning path, taking into
account the different ways that people
learn. i.e. personal interests, learning
styles, concentration levels, etc.
Traditional course - lesson plan - progress
linear
Course material learned to expected outcomes.
Brilliant!!
7
What to do NOW, during the transition period?
Continue with the digitization. - find new ways
to use digital materials in teaching/learning
Assure that we use technology that adds value to
the process. (do not use technology for the
sake of using technology) - deliver course
material in an interesting way - We need to
make the classroom more interesting than the
corner. (The Wire HBO)
Ubiquitous, useful information. (the WWW)
(anytime, anywhere) - provide information before
class - reinforce course information - material
available in the classroom for instant access
Retain individual teaching style and personality!
8
Take our time and do it right!
Survived the 2 great educational scares of the
90s
1. Great teacher in the sky scare. (mid
1990s) 1 course 1 teacher
2. Great rush to get online scare. (late
1990s) online for everybody and everything
(University of Phoenix)
Student reasons to take online course - out of
the vicinity for a portion of time - wanted
in-class but sections full - course scheduling
problems - work schedule conflict - child care
needs - like to take online courses - live a
considerable distance
9
UCC student demographics.
- 74 reside in Union County - 16.6 other NJ
counties - 3 out of state (31 out of 36 are in
NY)
UCC online students - 81.8 take traditional
courses (campus visit) - 18.2 take all online
It is not a great hardship for most UCC students
to visit campus.
10
Blended Learning comes into play. Blended
Learning is a blend of face-to-face (classroom)
and at-a-distance (usually online) teaching
within one course.
Infinite possibilities
totally online with a few on campus visits
portion of content online with approximately half
of the on campus requirement
- the amount of time spent in either is at the
discretion of the instructor.
- this allows for flexibility in course delivery
to facilitate the individual course goals,
expected outcomes, and also, class demography.
11
Blended Learning is already practiced at UCC.
Formats of teaching/learning
Traditional face-to-face no technology
Campus Web 50 face-to-face 50 at-a-distance
Telecourse video content/ traditional
communications require campus visits
Blended Learning
25
Online completely online (one proctored exam)
Start of blended learning
Technology Enhanced face-to-face with some
technology in class/online
25 of the UCC online faculty - need
face-to-face campus visits to meet the academic
goals and add value to the distance course. -
exams, quizzes, orientations, labs, fraud
12
What is the biggest obstacle to teaching with
technology? Answer
Technology
Heres where it all falls apart!
Why should we expect the faculty, who have
spent their adult lives working in one
discipline, to learn another discipline,
technology.
Course Management Systems/Learning Management
Systems - a necessity for organizing the
course, communication, and materials. - need to
be made more intuitive - make training more
effective and easier.
13
Who creates the digital stuff? - images -
audio - video - animation
Technology to create this - is hard,
always changing - is not a retained skill
Teach Faculty Create for them Find on the Web
- works for some - in the long run easier
- get it right - digital factory
- links to sites - keep current - projectile
motion
Create a process efficient and easier
effective
American Sign Language Project
If the project has value to others, put together
a documented written and physical process in
place to make it efficient and easy.
14
Questions asked in music composition What do
you want to say? What instrument is needed to
say it? What voice of the instruments says it
best? How can you compose it to be
instinctive?
using technology
What is the goal of the project?
What technological tool do we want to use?
Is there an advantage to using technology?
How can we best use the tool to say what we want
to say?
How can we put it together so it can be used
easily?
15
Use of technology in blended learning.
- Assure that we are adding value to the process.
- Working towards a ubiquitous/invisible
technology use that is available anytime,
anywhere, on demand for
everyone.
easier, more efficient, and effective
(entertaining)
Faculty - creation, use, and teaching Students -
use and learning
