Title: The Man of Sin

The Man of Sin
Each of the ancient prophets spoke less for their
own time than for ours, so that their prophesying
is in force for us. 3SM 338.1
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming
(Parousia) of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our
gathering together unto him, (Verse 1)
Verse 2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or
be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor
by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ
is at hand.
Verse 3,4 Let no man deceive you by any means
for that day shall not come, except there come a
falling away (Apostasia) first, and that man of
sin be revealed, the son of perdition who
opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is
called God, or that is worshipped so that he as
God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself
that he is God
Is Paul Speaking about one Man?
Verse 3 Let no man deceive you by any means for
that day shall not come, except there come a
falling away (Apostasia) first, and that man of
sin be revealed, the son of perdition
  • Hebrews 97 But into the second went the high
priest alone once every year, not without blood,
which he offered for himself, and for the errors
    of the people
  • Timothy 316-17 All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness That the man of God
may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all
    good works.

Daniel 1136. "And the king shall do according to
his will and he shall exalt himself, and magnify
himself above every god, and shall speak
marvellous things against the God of gods, and
shall prosper till the indignation be
accomplished for that is determined shall be
"This compromise between paganism and
Christianity resulted in the development of 'the
man of sin' foretold in prophecy as opposing and
exalting himself above God. That gigantic system
of false religion is a masterpiece of Satan's
power-a monument of his efforts to seat himself
upon the throne to rule the earth according to
his will." The Great Controversy, p50.
Son of Perdition
Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you
twelve, and of you is a devil? He spake of Judus
Iscariot the son of Simon for he it was that
should betray him, being one of the twelve. John
But there came a time when paganism in the
Roman Empire fell before the advancing form of
Christianity. Then, as is stated on page 54,
"paganism had given place to the papacy. The
dragon had given to the beast 'his power, and his
seat, and great authority.'" that is, Satan then
began to work through the papacy, just as he had
formerly worked through paganism. But the papacy
is not represented by the dragon, because it is
necessary to introduce another symbol in order to
show the change in the form of the opposition to
God. Previous to the rise of the papacy, all
opposition to the law of god had been in the form
of paganism,--god had been openly defied but
from that time the opposition was carried on
under the guise of professed allegiance to him.
The papacy, however, was no less the instrument
of Satan than was pagan Rome for all the power,
the seat, and the great authority of the papacy,
were given it by the dragon. And so, although the
pope professes to be the vicegerent of Christ, he
is, in reality, the vicegerent of Satan--he is
antichrist. Great Controversy 1888 p680.1
Revelation 212 14, 16 And to the angel of the
church in Pergamos write These things saith he
which hath the sharp sword with two edges …  But
I have a few things against thee, because thou
hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam,
who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before
the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed
unto idols, and to commit fornication…  Repent
or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will
fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
At first there was little intercourse between the
Israelites and their heathen neighbors, but after
a time Midianitish women began to steal into the
camp. Their appearance excited no alarm, and so
quietly were their plans conducted that the
attention of Moses was not called to the matter.
It was the object of these women, in their
association with the Hebrews, to seduce them into
transgression of the law of God, to draw their
attention to heathen rites and customs, and lead
them into idolatry. These motives were studiously
concealed under the garb of friendship, so that
they were not suspected, even by the guardians of
the people. At Balaam's suggestion, a grand
festival in honor of their gods was appointed by
the king of Moab, and it was secretly arranged
that Balaam should induce the Israelites to
attend. He was regarded by them as a prophet of
God, and hence had little difficulty in
accomplishing his purpose. Great numbers of the
people joined him in witnessing the festivities.
They ventured upon the forbidden ground, and were
entangled in the snare of Satan. Beguiled with
music and dancing, and allured by the beauty of
heathen vestals, they cast off their fealty to
Jehovah. As they united in mirth and feasting,
indulgence in wine beclouded their senses and
broke down the barriers of self-control. Passion
had full sway and having defiled their
consciences by lewdness, they were persuaded to
bow down to idols. They offered sacrifice upon
heathen altars and participated in the most
degrading rites. PP 454.3
We have no time to lose. Troublous times are
before us. The world is stirred with the spirit
of war. Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in
the prophecies will take place. The prophecy in
the eleventh of Daniel has nearly reached its
complete fulfillment. Much of the history that
has taken place in fulfillment of this prophecy
will be repeated. In the thirtieth verse a power
is spoken of that "shall be grieved, and return,
and have indignation against the holy covenant
so shall he do he shall even return, and have
intelligence with them that forsake the holy
covenant. Verses 31-36, quoted. Scenes similar
to those described in these words will take
place." 13MR 394.1
As the storm approaches, a large class who have
professed faith in the third angel's message, but
have not been sanctified through obedience to the
truth, abandon their position and (As Balaam did
with Balac) join the ranks of the opposition. By
uniting with the world and partaking of its
spirit, they have come to view matters in nearly
the same light and when the test is brought,
they are prepared to choose the easy, popular
side. Men of talent and pleasing address, who
once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers
to deceive and mislead souls GC 608
"I saw the nominal church and nominal Adventists,
like Judas, would betray us to the Catholics to
obtain their influence to come against the truth.
The saints then will be an obscure people, little
known to the Catholics but the churches and
nominal Adventists who know of our faith and
customs (for they hated us on account of the
Sabbath, for they could not refute it) will
betray the saints and report them to the
Catholics as those who disregard the institutions
of the people that is, that they keep the
Sabbath and disregard Sunday. E.G. White,
Spalding--Magan Unpublished Testimonies, p. 1.
Many who went forth to meet the Bridegroom under
the messages of the first and second angels,
refused the third, the last testing message to be
given to the world, and a similar position will
be taken when the last call is made. RH,
October 31, 1899 par. 12
it passed and the next day it seemed as though
all the demons from the bottomless pit were let
loose upon us. the same ones and many more who
were crying for mercy two days before were now
mixed with the rabble and mocking, scoffing and
threatening in a most blasphemous manner, words
of William miller in a letter dated dec 13 1844
"Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to
commit whoredom with the daughters of
Moab.(Fallen Churches) And they called the people
unto the sacrifices of their gods and the people
did eat, and bowed down to their gods. (Today
they are doing this through the ecumenical
movement) And Israel joined himself unto
Baalpeor" Numbers 251-3. It was not long before
the poison had spread, like a deadly infection,
through the camp of Israel. Those who would have
conquered their enemies in battle were overcome
by the wiles of heathen women (in our time it
will be the fallen churches). The people seemed
to be infatuated. The rulers and the leading men
were among the first to transgress, and so many
of the people were guilty that the apostasy
became national. "Israel joined himself unto
Baalpeor." …A terrible pestilence broke out in
the camp, to which tens of thousands speedily
fell a prey. God commanded that the leaders in
this apostasy be put to death by the magistrates.
This order was promptly obeyed. The offenders
were slain, then their bodies were hung up in
sight of all Israel that the congregation, seeing
the leaders so severely dealt with, might have a
deep sense of God's abhorrence of their sin and
the terror of His wrath against them. …Zimri, one
of the nobles of Israel, came boldly into the
camp, accompanied by a Midianitish harlot, a
princess "of a chief house in Midian," whom he
escorted to his tent. Never was vice bolder or
more stubborn. Inflamed with wine (in our case,
it will be false doctrine, as in bible prophecy
wine represents teaching), Zimri declared his
"sin as Sodom," and gloried in his shame…
flaunted his sin in the sight of the
congregation, as if to defy the vengeance of God
and mock the judges of the nation. Phinehas, the
son of Eleazar the high priest, rose up from
among the congregation, and seizing a javelin "he
went after the man of Israel into the tent," and
slew them both, pp 445 Apostasy at Jordan
On Wednesday April 17, 21 Seventh-day Adventist
pastors joined four hundred Anglicans,
Pentecostals, Salvation Army, Methodists and
other denominations for an "Adventures in
Evangelism" seminar sponsored by the Willow Creek
Association, Chicago, USA. The main speakers, Lee
Strobel and Mark Mittelberg are leaders in the
organisation that has become famous in Christian
circles around the world, for its "Seeker
Services" and reaching the secular mind. The
opening presentation, "If Jesus Lived in My
House" emphasised the "unexpected adventure" for
Christians who would work and pray for their
neighbours and close contacts. The "One, One,
One" method of a group of Christians agreeing to
pray for one minute for one person at one oclock
each day, was featured. After two further
presentations, "Evangelism that looks like you"
and "Taking risks to reach Sceptics like Me" the
day concluded with an exploration of the use of
alternative worship styles. Whatever the views of
the participating Adventist pastors, two things
can be said about the seminar it was very well
organised, and Willow Creek have a clear vision
for meaningful and relevant contemporary
evangelism. Certainly the day offered useful
pointers and stimulated the mind to evaluate our
own evangelistic methods and styles. Entered

Verse 8 And then shall the wicked one be
revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the
spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the
brightness of his coming (Parousia) Verse 9 Even
him, whose coming (Parousia) is after the working
of Satan with all power and signs and lying
In Paul's second epistle to the Thessalonians,
he exhorts to be on guard, and not depart from
the faith. He speaks of Christ's coming as an
event to immediately follow the work of Satan in
spiritualism in these words "Even him, whose
coming is after the working of Satan with all
power and signs and lying wonders, and with all
deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that
perish because they received not the love of the
truth, that they might be saved. And for this
cause God shall send them strong delusion, that
they should believe a lie that they all might be
damned who believed not the truth, but had
pleasure in unrighteousness." ST, April 12,
1883 par. 19
The beast which is a symbol of the papacy is
introduced in revelation 13 and following it, in
the same line of prophecy, "another beast" is
seen "coming up," rev. 1311-14. which
exercises "all the power of the first beast
before him," that is, in his sight. this other
beast must therefore be a persecuting power also
and this is shown in that "it spake as a dragon."
the papacy received all its power from Satan, and
the two-horned beast exercises the same power it
also becomes the direct agent of Satan. And its
satanic character is further shown in that it
enforces the worship of the image of the beast,
by means of false miracles. "He doeth great
wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from
heaven on the earth in the sight of men, and
deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the
means of those miracles which he had power to do

Dance of Deception
False Prophets
False Prophet
And, behold, one of the children of Israel came
and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman
in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all
the congregation of the children of Israel, who
were weeping before the door of the
tabernacle of the congregation.  And he went
after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust
both of them through, the man of Israel, and the
woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed
from the children of Israel. Numbers 251-8
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against
the rulers of the darkness of this world, against
spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore
take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye
may be able to withstand in the evil day, and
having done all, to stand… And take the helmet of
salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God Ephesians 612-17)
Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets I
have slain them by the words of my mouth and thy
judgments are as light that goeth forth. Hosea
"The scenes connected with the working of the man
of sin are the last features plainly revealed in
this earth's history." The people now have a
special message to give to the world, the third
angel's message. Those who, in their experience,
have passed over the ground, and acted a part in
the proclamation of the first, second, and third
angels' messages, are not so liable to be led
into false paths as are those who have not had an
experimental knowledge of the people of God. . .
2Selected Messages 102.1
Meaning of Antichrist to Be Understood
Those who become confused in their understanding
of the Word, who fail to see the meaning of
antichrist, will surely place themselves on the
side of antichrist. There is no time now for us
to assimilate with the world. Daniel is standing
in his lot and in his place. The prophecies of
Daniel and of John are to be understood. They
interpret each other. They give to the world
truths which every one should understand. These
prophecies are to be witnesses in the world. By
their fulfillment in these last days they will
explain themselves. The Lord is about to punish
the world for its iniquity. He is about to punish
religious bodies for their rejection of the light
and truth which has been given them. The great
message, combining the first, second, and third
angels' messages, is to be given to the world.
This is to be the burden of our work. Those who
truly believe in Christ will openly conform to
the law of Jehovah. The Sabbath is the sign
between God and His people and we are to make
visible our conformity to the law of God by
observing the Sabbath. It is to be the mark of
distinction between God's chosen people and the
world (MS 10, 1900). 7BC 949
Verse 10-12 And with all deceivableness of
unrighteousness in them that perish because they
received not the love of the truth, that they
might be saved. And for this cause God shall send
them strong delusion, that they should believe a
lie That they all might be damned who believed
not the truth, but had pleasure in
The spirit which actuated those priests and
rulers is still manifested by many who make a
high profession of piety. They refuse to examine
the testimony of the Scriptures concerning the
special truths for this time. They point to their
own numbers, wealth, and popularity, and look
with contempt upon the advocates of truth as few,
poor, and unpopular, having a faith that
separates them from the world. GC 596.1
Christ foresaw that the undue assumption of
authority indulged by the scribes and Pharisees
would not cease with the dispersion of the Jews.
He had a prophetic view of the work of exalting
human authority to rule the conscience, which has
been so terrible a curse to the church in all
ages. And His fearful denunciations of the
scribes and Pharisees, and His warnings to the
people not to follow these blind leaders, were
placed on record as an admonition to future
generations. GC 596.2
The Great Controversy, 579-581 The influence of
Rome in the countries that once acknowledged her
dominion is still far from being destroyed. And
prophecy foretells a restoration of her power. 'I
saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death
and his deadly wound was healed and all the
world wondered after the beast.' Verse 3. The
infliction of the deadly wound points to the
downfall of the Papacy in 1798. . . . Paul states
plainly that the 'man of sin' will continue until
the second advent. 2 Thessalonians 23-8. To the
very close of time he will carry forward the work
of deception. . . ."And let it be remembered, it
is the boast of Rome that she never changes. The
principles of Gregory VII and Innocent III are
still the principles of the Roman Catholic
Church. And had she but the power, she would put
them in practice with as much vigor now as in
past centuries. Protestants little know what they
are doing when they propose to accept the aid of
Rome in the work of Sunday exaltation.
While they are bent upon the accomplishment of
their purpose, Rome is aiming to re-establish her
power, to recover her lost supremacy. Let the
principle once be established in the United
States that the church may employ or control the
power of the state that religious observances
may be enforced by secular laws in short, that
the authority of church and state is to dominate
the conscience, and the triumph of Rome in this
country is assured. God's Word has given warning
of the impending danger let this be unheeded,
and the Protestant world will learn what the
purposes of Rome really are, only when it is too
late to escape the snare. She is silently growing
into power. Her doctrines are exerting their
influence in legislative halls, in the churches,
and in the hearts of men. She is piling up her
lofty and massive structures in the secret
recesses of which her former persecutions will be
repeated. Stealthily and unsuspectedly she is
strengthening her forces to further her own ends
when the time shall come for her to strike. All
that she desires is vantage ground, and this is
already being given her. We shall soon see and
shall feel what the purpose of the Roman element
is. Whoever shall believe and obey the Word of
God will thereby incur reproach and persecution."
The Great Controversy, 579-581
