Title: Number Sense and Counting

1
Number Sense and Counting
  • EDN 322

2
Number Sense
  • An intuitive feel for numbers and their
various uses and interpretations. Also includes
the ability to compute accurately and
efficiently, to detect errors, and to recognize
    results as reasonable.

3
Helping students develop number sense requires
  • Appropriate modeling
  • Posing process questions
  • Encouraging thinking about numbers
  • Creating a classroom environment that nurtures
    number sense

Group Recognition
  • It saves time.
  • It is the forerunner of some powerful number
ideas. Children who can name small groups give
evidence of knowing early order relations, such
as 3 is more than 2.

8
Group Recognition
  • It helps develop more sophisticated counting
    skills.
  • It accelerates the development of addition and
    subtraction.

9
Counting Principles
  • Each object to be counted must be assigned one
    and only one number name.
  • The number-name list must be used in a fixed
order every time a group of objects is counted.
    (Stable Order Rule)

10
Counting Principles
  • The order in which the objects are counted
    doesnt matter. (Order irrelevance)
  • The last number name used gives the number of
objects. This principle is a statement of the
cardinality rule, which connects counting with
    how many.

11
Counting Stages
  • Rote Counting A child using rote counting knows
some number names, but not necessarily the proper
sequence. (p. 119) Rote counters may not have
    mastered all four counting principles.
  • Rational Counting The child gives a correct
number name as objects are counted in succession.
Rational counters exhibit all four counting
    principles.

12
Counting Strategies
  • Counting On The child gives correct number
names as counting proceeds and can start at any
    number and begin counting.
  • Counting Back Giving the correct number names
counting backward from a particular point.

13
Counting Strategies
  • Skip Counting The child gives correct names,
but instead of counting by ones, counts by twos,
    fives, tens, or other values.
