INTRODUCTION
Slope is the vertical change in a line in
relation to the horizontal change.

The line in the graph has a vertical change of
six and a horizontal change of seven, so its
slope is 6/7.

Positive Slope
This figure has a negative slope because its
y-coordinate decreases as its x-coordinate
increases.
This figure has a positive slope because its
y-coordinate increases with its x-coordinate.

Undefined Slope
Zero Slope
The slope of this line is 0/3 so the slope is a
zero slope because zero divided by anything is
zero.
The slope of this line is 3/0, so it is undefined
because it isnt possible to divide anything by
zero.

GRAPHING A LINE WITH A POINT AND A SLOPE
To graph a line with a slope and one point,
pick a slope and one point (2,3) and a slope of
1/3.
Use the vertical/horizontal method of slope to
get a second point.

GRAPHING A LINE WITH TWO POINTS
First, plot two points on a graph (2,3) and
(5,4).
Then, substitute the x and y coordinates of the
two points into the equation, m(y-y)/(x-x). The
answer should be 1/1-this is the slope.

Use the slope to plot a point at (5,4).

SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM
Slope-intercept form is ymxb where y and x are
coordinates and m is the slope and b is the y-
intercept.
Lets use the equation y3x3 to graph a line.
Again, use the slope to plot another point.

GRAPHING A LINE WITH STANDARD FORM
Standard form of a linear equation is AxByC
where C is a constant. By substituting 0 for y,
the x-intercept (where the line crosses the x
axis) is found and by substituting 0 for x, the
y- intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis)
is found.

REAL LIFE SITUATION
Oxford Mississippis City Hall needs to build a
ramp for its disabled citizens so the building
can be more accessible.
We know that the door to City Hall rises four
feet above the ground. To save distance, we
divide the height by two to fit into the distance
two ramps. The slope should be 1/14.
Now we need to find the distance of each ramp.

THE SOLUTION
Since the slope says that for every vertical
foot, there are 14 horizontal feet, all we have
to do is double the horizontal feet because the
height of each ramp is 2ft..
