Farming Moves West
  • 1862Congress Passed the Homestead Act enabled
    the head of a household to acquire 160 acres for
    10 Dollars. Owner must reside or cultivate the
    land for five years. What problems could have
    come from the Act?

Farming the Plains
  • What Problems does one encounter in Farming the
    Plains?
  • No trees or water had to rely on the iron clad
    drill well and cast iron windmill.
  • Joseph Glidden (invents Barbed Wire 1874).
  • Mechanical Binderallowed grain to be tied into
    sheaves as fast as it was cut. 2 people could
    bind 20 acres of wheat a day.

Rail and Settlement
  • Prized land near the railroad company was owned
    by the railroad. Created bureaus of immigration
    to help settle the land.
  • Created the west as a place that would cure
    disease and a good investment.
  • A place where women could find husbands.
  • Created myth that if trees were planted the rain
    would follow.
  • Huge increase in production seen in Minn., the
    Dakotas, Kansas, and Nebraska., Wisconsin turned
    to Cheese

Life on the Plains
  • The temp did not live up to the picture Summer
    over 100 degrees. In winter families were
    stranded on their property.
  • Locusts proved to be a major problem
  • Drought was also a huge problem along t he land
    running along the 98th meridian. Most settlement
    occurred period a brief period of heavy rainfall.
    If it was not for the Transcontinental railroad
    they would have not survived

Plain Economics
  • Life as a farmer changed from subsistance and
    cash crop farming to large scale endeavors.
    These required more land more tools and more
    food.
  • Their income was tied to the unpredictable price
    of grain. Had to rely on the rail and pay people
    to store their product, and merchants to sell it.
  • Farming required large investments to get water
    and goods many would mortgage their farm.
  • 1900 only 1/3 of all wheat and corn farms were
    tilled by tenats

Life continued
  • Morrill Act Under the act, each eligible state
    received a total of 30,000 acres of federal land.
    This land, or the proceeds from its sale, was to
    be used toward establishing and funding the
    educational institutions
  • Women wrote much of what we know of plains life.
    Born and Scrubbed suffered and dies, Hamlin
    Garlands poem.
  • Novels by Edna Faber and Willa Cather documented
    life on the plains
  • Life on plains lost prestigeseen as backward.
    Focus turned to city and industry
