Beringia
15,000 yrs. ago the Earth was in an Ice Age when
much of the Earths water was frozen in glaciers.
This glaciation caused water levels around the
world to be lower.
These lower water levels created a land bridge,
called Beringia, between Asia and North
America.

About 15,000 yrs. ago, ancient people crossed
this land bridge travelling from Asia to North
America.
North America
Asia
Beringia was between Asia and North America, by
present-day Alaska.

Over many generations these ancient peoples
migrated throughout the Americas.
Today we call these people Native Americans.

Vikings 1st Europeans to arrive
Canada
In A.D. 1000, Leif Eriksson reached the east
coast of present-day Canada, probably
Newfoundland.
The Vikings settled for a short time, not knowing
that they were in a new world.
After trouble with natives and/or climate change,
the Vikings returned to Greenland.

Christopher Columbus
Almost 500 years after the Vikings, Columbus
arrived in the New World in 1492.
Columbus gets credit for discovering the New
World because after him, settlements become
permanent.

Amerigo Vespucci
Italian Amerigo Vespucci explored parts of the
New World and was the first to realize that he
was in a New World.

Magellan
Ferdinand Magellans expedition was the first to
circumnavigate the globe.

Cortes
Hernando Cortes was a Spanish conquistador that
conquered the Aztec of Mexico in 1521.

Pizarro
Francisco Pizarro was a Spanish conquistador that
conquered the Inca of Peru.

Why explore?
CAUSE
EFFECT
During the 1400s (15th century), the Italians
controlled trade throughout the Mediterranean Sea.
Competing European powers like Spain, Portugal,
England went out to explore a new way to trade
routes.
CAUSE

In 1453, the Turks captured Constantinople, an
important trade route to lands east, like China,
India, the East Indies.
Europeans wanted to find a way around the Turks.

Jamestown
In 1607, English settlers established their first
permanent colony in the New World, called
Jamestown.
From Jamestown the English continued to expand in
North America, creating our Original Thirteen
Colonies.

Europeans discovered that North America had vast
amounts of land and resources.
CAUSE
Soon, European powers like France, Britain,
Spain were competing for that land and those
resources.
EFFECT
France Britain went to war against each other.
It became the French Indian War

Britain won that war. What was the effect of
